What are some common challenges part-time lighting designers face when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Part-time lighting designers often juggle several projects at once, which can lead to scheduling conflicts and tight deadlines. Coordinating with different teams, such as set designers, directors, and technical staff, requires strong communication and time management skills. Additionally, adapting to varying venue requirements and technology setups can be challenging but provides valuable experience and networking opportunities. Being proactive in organizing your calendar and maintaining clear communication with all collaborators is essential to managing these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part-Time Lighting Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part-Time Lighting Designer, you need a solid understanding of lighting principles, design aesthetics, and experience with theatrical or architectural lighting, often supported by relevant education or portfolio work. Proficiency in lighting design software like AutoCAD, Vectorworks, and lighting control systems is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with production teams and adapt to project needs. These skills ensure visually compelling, safe, and efficient lighting solutions that enhance the overall atmosphere and success of each project.

What does a part-time lighting designer do?

A part-time lighting designer is responsible for creating and implementing lighting plans for various events, performances, or architectural spaces, typically on a flexible or project-based schedule. They work closely with directors, event planners, or architects to achieve the desired mood, visibility, and effects using different lighting techniques and equipment. Their duties may include designing lighting plots, setting up and programming lighting systems, and ensuring safety standards are met. Part-time positions allow for flexibility and may involve working evenings, weekends, or irregular hours depending on the production or event schedule.

Job description

About Us Bellevue Lighting specializes in creating immersive audiovisual and lighting experiences for events, performances, and installations. We're a team of highly skilled, creative professionals who thrive on innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. We are looking for multiple experienced technicians to join our crew for an ongoing, part-time role. This is not a labor list-we're seeking skilled professionals who take ownership of their craft, contribute to creative problem-solving, and help execute high-quality productions. Role Overview As a Crew Member, you'll be responsible for setting up, operating, and troubleshooting lighting, video, and audio systems for a wide range of events and installations. This role is perfect for experienced technicians who want consistent, high-level work without committing to a full-time position. Key Responsibilities
  • Set up, program, and operate lighting, video, and sound systems for live events, theatrical productions, and installations.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain audiovisual equipment to ensure seamless execution.
  • Collaborate with designers, project managers, and fellow technicians to bring creative visions to life.
  • Assist with load-ins, technical rehearsals, and show operation.
  • Ensure all equipment meets ETCP and OSHA safety standards.
  • Adapt to last-minute changes with a professional and solution-oriented mindset.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in audiovisual, lighting, or live event production.
  • Proficiency with lighting consoles (ETC, Chamsys), sound systems (Dante, QLab, digital mixers), and video equipment (projection, LED walls, media servers).
  • Experience with networked AV systems, power distribution, and rigging.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
Preferred but Not Required
  • ETCP Certification or equivalent training.
  • Experience with special effects, automation, or interactive installations.
  • Background in theatrical lighting, live music, or film production.
Why Join Us?
  • Ongoing, part-time opportunities with a company that values skill and creativity.
  • Work on high-profile events and installations.
  • Collaborate with top-tier designers, technicians, and creative teams.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and specialized training.
  • A dynamic, supportive, and innovative work environment.
