What does a lighting application engineer do?

A Lighting Application Engineer specializes in designing, planning, and implementing lighting solutions for various environments such as offices, industrial facilities, and outdoor spaces. They work closely with clients, architects, and electrical contractors to ensure lighting systems meet technical requirements, energy codes, and aesthetic goals. Their role often involves performing lighting calculations, creating technical documentation, and providing support throughout the installation process. Additionally, they may stay up to date with the latest lighting technologies and industry standards to recommend the most efficient and innovative solutions.

How does a lighting application engineer typically collaborate with architects and other project stakeholders?

Lighting Application Engineers frequently work alongside architects, interior designers, and electrical engineers to develop tailored lighting solutions that align with a project's aesthetic and functional requirements. Collaboration often involves participating in design meetings, reviewing architectural drawings, and offering technical expertise on fixture selection and placement. Effective communication skills are essential, as the role requires translating complex lighting concepts into practical recommendations that satisfy both design intent and technical constraints. This collaborative process ensures that lighting systems not only enhance the visual appeal of a space but also meet energy efficiency and regulatory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lighting application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lighting Application Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, lighting design principles, and knowledge of relevant standards, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with lighting simulation software (such as DIALux or AGi32), CAD tools, and energy codes is typically required, along with certifications like LEED or LC (Lighting Certified) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication, and project management skills help you effectively collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient lighting solutions that meet client needs and regulatory requirements.

Job description

ATG LED Lighting is a leading manufacturer of high-performance, energy-efficient LED luminaires and lamps for commercial, industrial, and infrastructure applications. Since 2001, ATG has pioneered LED retrofit technology โ€” including the first Type C LED T8 tubes โ€” and today offers a full line of indoor and outdoor products, from architectural area and flood luminaires to troffers and high-bays. With six U.S. distribution centers and industry-leading 10-year warranties on many products, ATG is one of the most trusted suppliers for both renovation and new construction projects.

The Role

We are seeking a Lighting Designer with strong AGI32 skills to support our sales team, rep agencies, and distributor partners with photometric layouts and application engineering. You will turn project requirements into accurate, code-compliant lighting designs that help win projects โ€” from warehouse high-bay retrofits to parking lot, area, and flood layouts. This is a hybrid role combining in-office collaboration with remote flexibility.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Produce photometric layouts and point-by-point calculations in AGI32 for indoor and outdoor commercial/industrial projects
  • Recommend optimal fixture selection, quantities, mounting heights, and spacing from ATGโ€™s product line to meet target light levels and budgets
  • Ensure designs comply with IES recommendations and applicable energy codes (e.g., footcandle targets, uniformity, BUG ratings, Title 24/ASHRAE 90.1)
  • Support sales, rep agencies, and distributors with fast-turnaround layouts, revisions, and design documentation for bids and submittals
  • Prepare professional deliverables: layout drawings, calculation summaries, fixture schedules, and energy-savings comparisons for retrofit proposals
  • Interpret architectural drawings, CAD files, and site plans; work in AutoCAD as needed for backgrounds and exports
  • Maintain and organize ATG photometric files (IES files) and coordinate with product management on new product data
  • Assist with DLC listings and utility rebate documentation where photometric data is required
  • Train sales team members and rep partners on lighting design basics and design request best practices
What Youโ€™ll Bring
  • 2+ years of lighting design or application engineering experience, preferably with an LED lighting manufacturer, rep agency, or engineering firm
  • Proficiency in AGI32 is required; experience with Visual, DIALux, or ElumTools a plus
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and ability to work from architectural/site drawings
  • Solid understanding of photometrics: footcandles, uniformity, distribution types, BUG ratings, and IES files
  • Familiarity with IES standards and energy codes (ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, Title 24) preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple design requests with quick turnarounds
  • Clear communicator, comfortable supporting salespeople and customers
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in architectural engineering, electrical engineering, or related field preferred; LC (Lighting Certified) credential a plus
  • Salary $65,000โ€“$90,000, commensurate with experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Ongoing product and software training

ATG LED Lighting is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
