Looking for a rewarding job this fall?
Apply to join our lifeguard team! Lifeguard certification is not required at the time of application. Selected candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment and have the cost of their lifeguard certification course covered by the Village. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing the certification requirements.
The Lifeguard position is a part-time position in the Aquatics Department and reports directly to the Aquatics Safety Coordinator. In the absence of the Aquatics Supervisor, direction may also come from the Aquatics Management team or the Shift Lead. The primary responsibility of the Lifeguard is to maintain a safe, enjoyable environment in the competition pool, waterpark, and Lake Andrea.
Job Duties
  • Alertly and actively supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies fairly and consistently.
  • Ensures visibility to all pool users and immediately intervenes in any emergency situation or potentially hazardous situation.
  • Perform appropriate first-aid and emergency care when an incident occurs; capability to use any of the RecPlex rescue or safety equipment.
  • Promote aquatic programs through direct interaction with members and guests.
  • Maintain knowledge of Aquatics daily schedule.
  • Keep the deck area neat and clean; complete daily cleaning checklists.
  • Be familiar with pool standards and conduct visual pool inspections throughout shift; note any discrepancies and inform appropriate supervisor.
  • Compile records of pool utilization, maintenance, accident/incident, oxygen and rescue reports as needed.
  • Work, communicate and assist favorably with supervisors, co-workers and patrons.
  • Participate in scheduled in-service trainings and staff meetings.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures as needed.
  • Maintain an active role in American Red Cross Safety Education Audits and Training.
  • Know and understand American Red Cross standards.
  • Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Aquatics Department.

Requirements
Physical
  • Ability to visually monitor pool area; verbally communicate.
  • Ability to physically pull a drowning victim from the pool.
  • Work is performed in an indoor pool environment or outdoor beach waterfront with exposure to warm temperatures and heavy humidity, slippery surfaces, water and pool chemicals.
  • Requires long periods of attentiveness, swimming, jumping, diving, standing, sitting, pulling, pushing, reaching, carrying, cleaning, hearing, and moving about pool area, moderate lifting (15-50 lbs.).
  • Ability to handle heavy public contact and exposure to stressful and emergency situations.
  • Flexible schedule; hours will be set by the Aquatics Management Staff.

A swimming skills test will be required at the time of the interview: American Red Cross lifeguard prerequisite test which includes a sequence of 150-yard swim, 2 minute tread, and then an addition 50-yard swim continuously, followed by a timed event sequence of swimming, diving 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object, and swimming back to the starting point with the object in tow.
Educational, Certifications and Experience
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • American Red Cross Waterpark Certified Lifeguard Certification required before first scheduled shift.
  • American Red Cross Waterfront Certified Lifeguard Certification required for seasonal beach guarding at Lake Andrea.
  • Twelve (12) months previous experience as a certified Lifeguard from a nationally accredited training organization preferred.
  • Uniform will be worn at all times while on duty.
