Job Summary
We are currently seeking a Deputy Program Manager to support our Life Science Research (LSR) operations in a regulated R&D environment. This position will focus on internal project execution and team coordination within a large, multi-year government research program, ensuring cross-functional integration, operational rigor, and on-time delivery of high-quality scientific deliverables. Working in a matrixed organization, the Deputy Program Manager drives day-to-day execution of project tasks and deliverables across disciplines (toxicology, laboratory operations, data management, quality, etc.) while partnering closely with the Program Manager - who leads overall strategy and client relations - to ensure program objectives are met without overlapping responsibilities. This is predominantly an internal-facing role emphasizing team communication, execution discipline, and subcontractor coordination, to complement the Program Manager's external and strategic focus. The Deputy Program Manager is expected to be a proactive leader in orchestrating resources and processes to meet contract requirements and exceed client expectations, all while maintaining strict compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements inherent in the LSR domain (e.g., GLP). This position will be based in West Jefferson, OH (with occasional travel to Columbus, OH as needed).
Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with the Business Development staff to establish overall proposal strategies and themes which clearly differentiates Battelle from other potential providers of service. Coordinates the selection of proposal team member organizations (strategic partners, sub-contractors, universities, divisions, etc) and the efforts of the proposal team to formulate an offering that persuasively presents the project approach that meets the client needs and documents the value created for the client by this approach at a competitive price.
  • Impacts contract negotiation activities and has a strong working knowledge of contractual issues relative to the project being managed relevant to scope of the work and scheduling and subcontracts.
  • Prepares and presents presentations to internal management and to external customers to provide reviews and updates on technical aspects, cost, and schedule.
  • Directs project risk planning. Applies processes and procedures to identify, analyze, classify, prioritize and manage program risks to formulate a risk management plan that assigns responsibility, determines approaches and specifies mitigation approaches and contingencies in the risk management process.
  • Integrates safety policies and regulations into the project plan. Directs the process of early identification, analysis, reduction or elimination of hazards. Directs development of program safety measures and implementation of standard workplace safety practices, to mitigate injuries and foster a healthy work environment for staff.
  • Stays abreast of Project Management best practices. Knows, understands and applies Battelle processes and procedures. Implements Project Management best practices and management policies. Understands, embraces and executes relevant Quality Systems and applicable industry regulations. Maintains a thorough understanding of and ensures compliance with applicable government and industry regulations.

Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education/experience in a relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP Certification highly preferred.

Compensation Data
Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $105,600 - $140,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
