What is a library tech?

Library Techs, or Library Technicians, are professionals who support librarians in managing library operations. They handle tasks such as organizing materials, assisting patrons, maintaining library databases, and processing new books or media. Library Techs also help with circulation, cataloging, and sometimes lead programs or workshops. Their role is essential in keeping libraries running smoothly and ensuring patrons have access to information and resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library tech?

To thrive as a Library Tech, you need knowledge of library organization systems, attention to detail, and typically an associate degree or certification in library technology. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), cataloging software, and digital databases is important for daily operations. Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills help Library Techs assist patrons and support library staff efficiently. These competencies ensure smooth library operations, accurate information management, and positive patron experiences.

What are some common challenges faced by library techs when managing digital and physical collections?
