About this Job

This is a full-time position located at the State Library in Baton Rouge, LA.

This position is responsible for overseeing Louisiana's public library participation in the Public Library Survey (PLS). This includes coordinating with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to review and edit submitted data for final reporting. This position also completes the State Library Administrative Agency (SLAA) survey every other year. The State Data Coordinator, as part of the consulting team in the Library Development Department, serves as a consultant to public libraries state-wide, providing advice and assistance on all aspects of public library services according to best practices and identified community needs. As a library consultant, this position will work closely with public library directors, staff, and trustees of public libraries. Because of the visibility of the position, the incumbent must have excellent interpersonal skills and credibility. Information and services provided must be accurate, current, and above reproach. The position travels extensively throughout the state representing the State Library in a number of vital venues.

Minimum Qualifications

A master's degree in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association followed by three years of experience in library services.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Oversees Louisiana's annual participation in the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Public Libraries Survey (PLS), including collecting, verifying, analyzing, and submitting statewide public library data.

  • Serves as the State Library's liaison for public library statistics, collaborating with Louisiana public libraries, IMLS, and library data coordinators nationwide.

  • Participates in national meetings and collaborates with state coordinators to develop and improve public library data standards, definitions, and collection procedures.

  • Manages, tests, and evaluates the PLS data collection system and prepares the annualPublic Libraries in Louisianareport and other data-driven publications.

  • Provides training and technical assistance on statistics collection, reporting, data interpretation, and the PLS; completes the biennial State Library Administrative Agency (SLAA) survey and maintains agency statistics.

  • Develops and delivers in-person and online training, webinars, workshops, and continuing education programs for library staff, including Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) instruction and course development.

  • Provides consulting and technical assistance to public library administrators, staff, trustees, and local officials on library governance, management, operations, funding, strategic planning, personnel, policies, facilities, and applicable laws.

  • Conducts site visits, attends library board meetings, prepares reports and presentations, and responds to requests for guidance and professional support.

  • Stays current on library trends through professional development and represents the State Library through conference presentations, workshops, and special events, including serving as a volunteer coordinator for the Louisiana Book Festival.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment. Current permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time appointment that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime.
