Library Media Specialist - Elementary School
SUMMARY:
It is the basic objective of the Library/Media Specialist to teach students and staff how to learn. The Library/Media Specialist needs to have knowledge of a wide variety of materials in order to individualize instruction and focus on the learner. Knowledge of curricular areas and ALA Standards is essential in order to further basic concepts through interdisciplinary resources. The Library/Media Specialist's role is one of teacher, manager, and educational resource. It is the Library/Media Specialist's responsibility to provide an accepting learning environment containing a wide variety of appropriate resources and to assist students in developing the skills needed to take advantage of these resources.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Library/Media Specialist will perform the following roles as appropriate:
Teacher:







  • Promotes a lifelong love of reading, learning and an appreciation of literature and other creative expressions of information.
  • Teaches students (at the point of need) the skills to select, evaluate and use information appropriately and effectively.
  • Integrates lessons into the curriculum of the classroom teacher.
  • Offers instruction that enables students and teachers to use multiple instructional tools and resources in the educational process.
  • Delivers instruction/guidance for research projects and large projects at both CAB and CSW including but not limited to: citations, resources, content, interlibrary loans and internet safety and appropriate search techniques. Knowledge of Noodletools helpful.

 Manager (in consultation with building principal):

  • Organizes, establishes, and supervises routines and procedures for the smooth operation of the library information center.
  • Plans, administers, implements and promotes the library information center program throughout the school community.
  • Identifies, selects, orders, receives, and organizes resources and equipment that support the school curriculum and the goals of the library media center.
  • Develops and maintains a balanced collection reflecting the needs of the school community, in accordance with the district materials selection policy.
  • Manages and administers the library budget, through collaborative efforts between Library/media Specialist and Principal, keeping records of all expenditures.
  • Inventories library media center resources biennially using Destiny circulation system.
  • Distributes, collects and helps maintain Chromebooks per the Red Clay 1:1 technology program.

Educational Resources:

  • Plans and works cooperatively with administrators and teachers by providing resources which promote the overall educational philosophy and objectives of the school.
  • Assists teachers in integrating library/media center services and resources and appropriate technology.
  • Promotes intellectual freedom and equity of access.
  • Is alert to new ideas, keeps abreast of innovative teaching methods and applies and shares research principles to the development and advancement of the library media program.


QUALIFICATIONS:
The Library/Media Specialist should qualify for certification by the Delaware Department of Education as a Library/Media Specialist.
