Job description

Housekeeper & Laundry Attendant

Shawnigan Lake School is seeking a Housekeeper and Laundry Attendant to work with our Operations team in providing comprehensive housekeeping services and specialized care in laundering clothes and linens for the School.

This is a full-time position offering a wage of $24.31 per hour, plus a full benefits package, a flexible work environment, and a nurturing family-friendly workplace.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This role will work as a member of our Housekeeping and Laundry teams. Flexibility is key as day to day duties will fluctuate based on the operational needs of the School. Shifts may be scheduled during daytime or evening hours, seven days per week.

Housekeeping Duties:

  • Maintain the cleanliness of student residences and other campus buildings, including common areas, student rooms, washrooms, and offices
  • Perform custodial tasks such as sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, polishing, and vacuuming floors and various surfaces
  • Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, and fittings
  • Deep clean and sanitize
  • Make beds, change linens, and tidy rooms as required
  • Monitor, retrieve, and dispose of waste and recyclables
  • Maintain cleanliness of cleaning supply areas, restock custodial supplies and report any maintenance issues or safety hazards
  • Other housekeeping duties as assigned

Laundry Duties:

  • Sort, wash, dry, and fold student laundry, athletic uniforms, kitchen and housekeeping linens, and other items
  • Operate and maintain laundry equipment, including washers, dryers, irons, and a shirt press
  • Perform sewing, name tagging, and heat pressing as required
  • Ensure student laundry is handled and kept separate from other students' items
  • Maintain a safe and clean laundry area by performing tasks such as daily dryer vacuuming and regular floor mopping
  • Other laundry duties as assigned

Pastoral & General Duties:

  • Provide a compassionate and supportive presence for students, modeling the school's core values of Curiosity, Compassion, Community, and Courage
  • Act as a point of contact for students, teachers, and parents with a professional demeanor
  • If assigned to work in a dorm:
  • Liaise with House Director(s) on internal housekeeping issues
  • Support the House Director(s) in the implementation of directives and strict adherence to House policies, rules, and protocols
  • Report all concerns regarding the physical and mental wellbeing of students to the House Director(s)

REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Previous experience in a custodial or laundry role, preferably within a boarding school or similar environment, is an asset
  • Working knowledge of cleaning and laundry products, procedures, and equipment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with a strong sense of initiative and organization
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to deal with minor problems or variances to routine
  • Proven record of professionalism, dependability, and attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to use discretion and maintain strict confidentiality
  • A high level of fitness and stamina, with the capability to consistently meet the physical demands of the position
  • Able to perform manual tasks through long periods of standing, lifting, bending, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and grasping
  • Capable of repetitive motions (e.g. vacuuming, mopping) and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling loads up to 30 lbs
  • Previous experience working with children, grades 8 - 12 an asset
  • Current WHMIS certification an asset
  • Flexible availability is required to work varied shifts. Shifts may be scheduled during daytime or evening hours, seven days per week.
