Job Description
The Acquisitions and Cataloging department at the Syracuse University Libraries is searching for a Library Technician. This position is primarily responsible for the tasks supporting the purchase of library collections materials, including but not limited to books, videos, films, other audio-visual materials, journals and databases in all formats.
Individuals in this position will work with Libraries' staff within and external to the acquisitions & cataloging department to research materials, finding identifying information, publishers and vendors to purchase/subscribe/license materials from.
Under general guidance, utilizes a specialized knowledge of subjects, computer applications, or disciplines that apply to library processes and/or services or provides specialized knowledge of library functions. Utilizes a variety of systems and resources to provide access to library collections and performs the more complex technical functions requiring proficiency with technical protocols, digital technology, and data manipulation skills. Exercises initiative and independent judgment when providing service or interpreting, analyzing, and applying policies and procedures. Routinely analyzes problems that may impact other Library departments or the organization, and /or external parties and organizations.
Education and Experience
Required qualifications:
โ€ข Associate degree and at least 2 years of work in a public service setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired qualifications:
โ€ข Library experience preferred but not required.
โ€ข Prior experience in public service or customer service preferred.
โ€ข Experience in an academic library with an acquisition's focus.

Responsibilities
โ€ข General Department Support
o Effectively and efficiently process requests/transactions in all areas.
o Respond promptly to all departmental communications.
- Receives requests for library materials, performs pre-order research for local holdings, identifies vendors, places order.
- Compares vendor information in local system to ensure timely payment, obtaining and completing necessary payment paperwork.
- Monitors open orders - communicating internally (staff & faculty) and externally (vendor) to provide updates on status of requests, orders and payments.
- Maintains records of purchases in library system and Spreadsheets.
โ€ข General Information Services Perform troubleshooting of issues.
โ€ข Technology Services Perform troubleshooting of issues.
โ€ข Reconciles monthly credit card statement using university system to accurately assign funds to expenditures.
โ€ข Assists with day-to-day and special acquisition projects.
โ€ข Participates In library-wide teams/initiatives/projects.
โ€ข Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
โ€ข Cognitive, auditory, verbal ability sufficient to receive information from and respond to inquiries/requests from staff and clients, etc.
โ€ข Hand and wrist dexterity, fine motor skills (e.g., for data entry, materials processing etc.)
โ€ข Visual and cognitive capability sufficient to see, read titles and materials, follow instructions.
Tools/Equipment
โ€ข Use PCs running Windows 11 operating systems, MS Office Suite 365, web browser, other Windows applications, and library systems software.
โ€ข Operate digital copiers and scanners for digital scanning and electronic delivery of library materials.
โ€ข Experience with data manipulation, including consolidating, manipulating, interpreting, and reporting.
