Basic Information

  • Reports to Trails West & Sugar Creek Branch Manager.
  • 20 hours per week.ย 
  • $17.07 per hour.

Schedule

Tuesday: 11:30 am - 8 pm

Thursday: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Friday: 8:30 am - 5 pm

Trails West Branch: 11401 East 23rd Street S, Independence, MO, 64052.ย 


Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1. Provides basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; collects fines and charges; updates customer records in the computer; verbally explains circulation policies and procedures; makes other computer inquiries; and processes patron requests for reserve items.ย 
  2. Maintains effective courteous working relationships with all library patrons and staff.ย 
  3. Assists patrons with use of library databases, computer equipment, and software.ย 
  4. Courteously answers telephone by identifying self and location, and if unable to assist with the request, directs call to the appropriate staff person.ย 
  5. Lifts, routes and shelves materials, which may weigh up to 35 pounds, from book bins and shelves.ย 
  6. Processes patrons' request material; prepares and sends Interlibrary Loan requests.ย 
  7. Performs other related work and as assigned, such as Kid's cafe, teen lock-ins, notary services and supporting programs or activities developed and promoted by other Library colleagues.

Branch Specific Duties

  • Trails West received United States Passport applications. Employees at this branch assist in processing applications and train new staff on the process. Staff must meet requirements of 22 CFR 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.

Requirements

  1. Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with customers of all ages.ย 
  2. Demonstrated ability to be a team player.ย 
  3. Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures.ย 
  4. Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.ย 
  5. Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.ย 
  6. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.ย 
  7. Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles.ย 
  8. Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level.ย 
  9. Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.ย 
  10. Many duties performed while standing and bending; ability to lift up to 35 lbs.ย 
  11. Ability to understand and be understood in English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.ย 
  • Customer Service experience preferred.

Work is performed at the Trails West Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.ย
