Job Summary

The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the library by helping patrons access resources, organizing materials, and maintaining library systems. This role provides both customer service and administrative support to ensure the library remains organized, accessible, and welcoming to all visitors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; 
  • Maryland resident
  • Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18–24)
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in a library, school, or customer service environment preferred
  • Licensure/Certification: None required
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
    • Good communication and customer service skills
    • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, databases, email)
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Attention to detail and accuracy in record keeping
    • Basic knowledge of library systems or classification methods preferred

What You’ll Do

  • Assist patrons in locating books, digital resources, and other materials
  • Check materials in and out using the library system
  • Shelve and organize books, magazines, and other materials
  • Process new materials, including labeling and catalog preparation
  • Maintain and update library records and databases
