Summary Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Library Clerk performs a wide variety of library duties and interfaces with patrons in rendering public and technical library services, such as assisting patrons with processing passport applications and assisting with the administration and organization of the library, and performs related duties as required. Performs circulation and reference service desk tasks and services.
Checks out and checks in library materials and collects fines/fees. Registers new borrowers and provides reference service in the assigned department using standard reference sources. Develops, maintains, and disseminates directory information to patrons.
Provides assistance to patrons with reader's advisory requests. Provides patrons with information about books, authors, and publishers. Interprets and resolves questions regarding library circulation policies.
Provides service to patrons for new and renewal passport applications and processes such applications with the US Department of State. Provides training and work direction for library aides. Reconciles cash, prepares cash receipts, and makes daily deposits.
Performs routine cataloging of library books and materials. Prepares reports and types forms and notices. Assists with the ordering and maintenance of records and materials.
Assists with the maintenance of statistics and other records. Assists with collection development and programming. Assists with loading and unloading vehicles, book bins, and book trucks.
Assists with the preparation of graphics, displays, and exhibits. Operates general office equipment such as laminators, paper cutters, computer software, scanners, photocopiers, fax machines, and printers. Operates and makes minor repairs to audiovisual equipment.
Operates binding machines and similar equipment. Ensures the library kiosk is properly stocked with books and that the books in the return box are checked in. Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of recent experience in clerical and customer service duties in a library. Thirty (30) college semester units may substitute for one (1) year of experience. Knowledge of: Dewey Decimal System Library database software Modern office methods, procedures, and equipment, including software and database programs Filing methods and recordkeeping to maintain accurate information in alphabetical, chronological, and/or numerical order Standard library clerical practices Microsoft Office Suite English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic mathematical principles Skill and Ability to: Provide efficient customer service using tact and courtesy Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing Organize with the ability to prioritize work and exercise independent judgment, wisdom, common sense, and initiative Follow and thoroughly carry out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision Proofread to identify errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, English usage, and statistics Perform routine mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy Operate a hand dolly Establish and maintain effective working relationships (working harmoniously) with those contacted in the course of work, including City and other government officials, community groups, and the public Define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions Manage situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment Apply safe work practices Perform routine tasks such as answering phone calls and organizing files Organize and reshelve returned items such as periodicals, books, and DVDs Register new library cardholders and issue library cards Plan and participate in special library events such as a children's movie night, used book sales, or any other special programs Maintain a computer database to help locate library materials Teach patrons to use library resources Operate general office equipment Run an automated system to check in and check out library materials and collect fines and fees Assist patrons with the process of new and renewal passport applications Physical Demands & Working Environment (Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations) This position works primarily in an indoor office environment and in close proximity to other workers Incumbents shall be exposed to those conditions normally encountered in a business office environment Positions in this class typically require balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodation Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of workday), and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of workday), and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of workday) to move objects.
