Job description

Library Assistant

Manage the school library/learning commons under direction of the District Librarian and the campus Principal. Provide library media services for students and teachers and perform specialized clerical duties in library/learning commons or administrative offices that require the application of library skills. Oversee basic school library operations and provide assistance to the District Librarian when needed. Assist others in the library catalog systems, library computers and software, and audiovisual equipment. Maintain a schedule for students to use the library/learning commons and teach library lessons, present books and literature, and promote literacy as directed by the District Librarian.

High School diploma

Working knowledge of computer software and library science

Able to work independently and cope with continual interruptions

Good keyboarding skills

Training in reading and audiovisual materials and equipment

Ability to lift up to 40 lbs to chest height occasionally

Good communications skills

Good organizational skills

Positive interpersonal skills

Experience working in a library/learning commons with references preferred

Ability to handle high stress and fast paced work environment

Assist in maintaining an organized and up-to-date catalog and circulation system

Process new materials, making them ready for checkout.

Keep the library/learning commons organized, clean, neat and welcoming to visitors.

Prepare bulletin boards, displays, etc. on a regular basis.

Help students and faculty locate materials through the use of the automated catalog and electronic resources.

Assist in finding and verifying bibliographic materials.

Monitor students while using the library.

Teach library related lessons as directed by the District Librarian.

Prepare and disseminate overdue notices and collect replacement costs for lost or damaged books.

Shelve materials and make sure items are maintained in Dewey order.

Obtain basic or "copy cataloging" information for newly acquired materials.

Arrange for interlibrary loans and maintain appropriate interlibrary loan records and reports.

Maintain and update databases of purchase orders and video and periodical collections.

Keep statistical records on usage, circulation, etc.

Notifies students when reserved books are available.

Assist in preparing bibliographies.

Assist with specific projects.

Help to maintain a friendly and helpful atmosphere for students and faculty.

Supervise and execute automated inventory.

Perform any other related duties that may be assigned by Library Coordinator.

Maintain a schedule for students in the use of the library/learning commons.

When a substitute is unavailable, cover classroom assignments as needed.
