Job description

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the direct supervision of The Claremont Colleges Library Head of Asian Library, the Asian Library Print and Digital Collections Engagement Specialist (PDES) is a donor-funded, three-year role. Principal responsibilities include: identifying East Asian language collections within the Asian Library with a high potential for engagement which could be disseminated to interested communities in digital or print format; collaborating within and outside of the Distinctive Collections and Digital Scholarship Division for planning, implementing and coordinating approved engagement projects; providing ongoing support to the Asian Library's existing outreach and programs. This is a temporary position anticipated for up to 3 years from date of hire, full-time, and benefits eligible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

65% of Time: Asian Library Print and Digital Collections Engagement and Dissemination

  • Identify and propose Asian studies collections at the Asian Library as well as throughout The Claremont Colleges Library for engagement and dissemination.

  • Plan engagement projects with the aim of increasing global access, such as collection digitization and publishing for items in the public domain.

  • Oversee project implementation and maintain project documentation.

  • Manage workflows associated with approved engagement projects.

  • Communicate status and progress on approved engagement projects.

  • Create metadata as required for print collections identified for digital dissemination.

  • Assess project impact in collaboration with the Head of the Asian Library and the Associate Dean for Strategy and Operations.

20 % of Time: Asian Library Team

  • Participate as an active and engaged team member by attending Asian Library meetings to discuss priorities and assist with solutions. Contribute to Asian Library planning and goal setting in support of the Library's strategic initiatives and priorities.

  • Support and assist the Head of the Asian Library, the Student Program Coordinators, and the Head of Cataloging and Metadata in hiring and training for student employees assigned to digital and print collections engagement.

  • Assist in Asian Library's research services, outreach and programs.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

15% of Time: Coordination

  • Coordinate potential stakeholders and/or partners.

  • Coordinate with Library colleagues to promote and engage communities on those projects.

  • Coordinate with the Digital Initiatives and Open Publishing Unit on digitization of and metadata creation for materials identified for engagement and dissemination.

  • Coordinate with the Data and Digital Scholarship Services Unit on related projects for materials identified for engagement and dissemination.

  • Coordinate with the Special Collections and Archives on Asian studies materials housed in Special Collections and Archives collection rooms. Work with Special Collections and Archives Operations Coordinator on the flow of materials in and out of the Special Collections and Archives.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training:

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field or the equivalent.

Experience:

  • Experience with rare book and archival collection digitization projects.

  • Experience in digitization and/or publication of East Asian information resources.

Competencies:

  • Proficiency in Chinese.

  • Knowledge of print and digital channels for information dissemination.

  • Familiarity with the East Asian publishing industry and book market.

  • Knowledge of metadata standards and schemes.

  • Understanding of preservation and dissemination practices for rare books and archival collections.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to do detail-oriented work.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

  • Demonstrated technical aptitude with publishing and/or digital dissemination platforms

Physical Requirements:

  • This position involves prolonged sitting and standing, frequent walking, frequent movement into varying body positions, and regular climbing of ladders, stairs, scaffolding, or similar structures.

  • The role routinely requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials, equipment, and objects weighing up to 25 pounds, as well as working indoors in occasionally noisy environments.

  • Employees must be able communicate effectively in person and by phone or other devices, read and interpret printed or electronic materials, and constantly perform computer-based work requiring repetitive hand and wrist movement.

Preferred Experience:

  • Project-based, internship, or one year of experience in digital scholarship related projects.

  • Experience in performing copy or enhanced cataloging of materials in formats including print, electronic, three-dimensional objects, technology, and games.

  • Advanced degree in East Asian Studies

  • Bibliographical proficiency in Japanese and Korean.

Work Schedule: The regular hours for this temporary, full-time position are 40 hours scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for 12 months annually. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule to work partial hours remotely as approved by the supervisor.

COMPENSATION

Pay: The pay rate for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position, between $22.00 and $24.50 per hour.
