Job description

The Opportunity:

Avantor is looking for an Associate Design Engineer to join our Devens, MA team!

The Associate is responsible for the development of approval drawings and prototypes for the single-use systems business, ensuring products meet customer performance requirements and quality standards. In addition to design, testing, and validation activities, this role owns product costing, cost analysis, and cost optimization initiatives to support profitability and operational efficiency. The Associate works closely with Account Management, Customer Service, Production, and Quality teams throughout the product development lifecycle.

This is a hybrid position based at our Devens, MA facility.

What we're looking for

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioscience Engineering (or related field) and/or equivalent experience, education and training

  • Experience: 1-2+ years AutoCAD or similar engineering software (2D and 3D)

  • Collaboration Tool: Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Excel

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • SolidWorks experience is highly preferred

    • Organizational and communication skills

    • Developing and maintaining professional relationships with customers and suppliers

    • Technical concepts and their application to customer's processes

How you will thrive and create an impact

  • Develop custom single use system assemblies through understanding of Bioprocess.

  • Develop both basic and more technical approval drawings based on sketches or descriptions from account managers or customers.

  • Act as a project lead between customers, third-party labs, and the commercial team to ensure projects are completed on schedule and according to the project plan.

  • Select appropriate subcomponents and ensuring all connections are engineered to function as required (e.g. temperature, pressure). This may include developing test protocols and performing physical tests.

  • Develop sale price of Single Use products using software provided and develop strategy in competitive situations.

  • Entering/maintaining Bills of Materials (BOM) and Method of Manufacturing (MOM) in ERP system.

  • Conduct feasibility and cost estimation of products to ensure the design can meet business and customer needs. Research new and innovative products in the market to advance component library and conduct testing on commercial viability.

  • Perform various tests (e.g., pressure test, pull test, etc.) and create validation packets for customers.

  • Maintain engineering documents including a library of all subcomponents with appropriate data.

  • Assist in resolving customer complaints in a timely manner; notify management of problems and suggest corrective actions.

  • Understand and support company operating procedures to provide proper and effective service to all customers and foster the development of long-term business relationships.

  • Occasional travel to customer locations. Valid driver's license required

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Typically works in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level.
Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems.
A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis.
Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs.
