Job Description General Statement of Duties Performs responsible paraprofessional and clerical work in the library. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class provides customer service in circulation, reader's advisory, and general provision of library services. Work may include assisting with cataloging collection and/or planning and implementing programs for all ages.
Work includes checking books or other media in and out, assisting patrons in locating books, typing, filing, issuing library cards, collecting fines and tracking down lost items, shelving books, DVDs, and audiobooks, preparing materials for programs and displays, and assisting patrons in the use of catalogs, computers, and other equipment. Work requires accuracy and significant public contact. Work also requires employees to be tactful and courteous.
Work is performed under regular supervision. Work is evaluated for customer service effectiveness and accuracy of work activities through daily observations, discussions, and reviews of completed work. FLSA Status This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime and compensatory time in accordance with Town policy.
This is a part-time role offering great flexibility. You will work a maximum of 20 hours per week, with flexibility to build your schedule within our Library core business hours of 9:00am - 6:00pm. Duties and Responsibilities Compiles records; checks books and equipment in and out; instructs patrons on how to use variousequipment;helpspatronsselectbooks;aidspatronsinreadersadvisoryandlocationof different types of books.
Verifiesduedates;computesandcollectsoverduefinesandcostsforlostor damaged books and other materials or DVDs, CDs, etc.; collects money for book sale items; makes change; checks for reserved books; and issues overdue notices to borrowers. Reviews pull list and pulls materials to be sent to NC Cardinal; pulls materials for the library patrons' hold list. May assist with cataloging books, DVDs, CDs, and other materials
Organizes books and material for return to shelves; examines condition and sets aside ones requiring mending and repair; sorts by number for shelving; performs shelving. Performs and interprets library policies and procedures such as checking books in and out, overdue charges and waivers, patron registration, loan periods and renewals, reserving books and materials, and lost book procedures; ensures the proper conduct of library patrons; enforces library rules and regulations. Issues borrower's library cards according to established procedures; issues library visitor passes when necessary.
Instructs patrons in the use of the catalog and index, computer operation, and copiers; assists with the location and use of reference materials; and provides computer assistance when necessary. Shelves books, audio CDs, and DVDs; keeps magazines on rack up to date; straightens books and materials on shelves. Assists with making materials for bulletin boards and other displays for monthly, seasonal, and holiday themes.
Assign patrons to use study rooms, maker space, and conference room. Updates, inputs, and locates information on a personal computer; maintains a database to ensure the collection is accessible. Answers telephone and provides information, transfers calls or takes messages.
Performs faxing, scanning, and copying services. Assists in keeping the library neat, orderly, and clean; sweeps, dusts, and vacuums. Performs related duties as required.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Some knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials, and practices. Working knowledge of books and authors. Considerable knowledge of computers, audio-visual equipment, and other equipment in the library.
Working knowledge of business math, English, and the use of business machines. Some knowledge of the theory and objectives of a public library system. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, and patrons.
Ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed. Ability to assign and monitor work and train volunteers. Physical Requirements Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move or lift objects. Must possess the visual acuity to maintain records, read book spines, count money, and operate a computer, audio-visual equipment, phone, and other office equipment. Desirable Education and Experience Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in office or library practices and considerable related experience, including some experience working with the public and some experience working in a library or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
