Job description

Ellendale Public School is seeking applicants for an elementary instructional aide.  This position will assist classroom teachers with the instruction of basic academics, social skills, and other formative skills in a public school setting.  Applicants roles and responsibilities shall include:
a.    Work with students under the supervision of the Principal or Classroom Teacher;
b.    Maintain accurate and timely records on assistance offered to students;
c.    Keep a daily log of activities and duties;
d.    Locate materials for teaching and student lessons;
e.     Assist with evaluation and progress reporting for identified students;
f.    Maintain communication with classroom teacher and principal;
g.    Maintain positive relationships with school staff, students, and parents;
h.    Present a positive image of the school to the public;
i.    Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students;
j.    Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher;
k.    Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities;
l.    Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes;
m.    Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher;
n.    Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher;
o.    Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips;
p.    Assist with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling;
q.    Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students;
r.    Assist students in the library or media center;
s.    Help students with their clothing upon arrival and prior to departure;
t.    Assist with lunch, snack, and clean-up routines;
u.    Assist with wash-up and toilet routines;
v.    Alert the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student;
w.    Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher;
x.    Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of teachers;
y.    Participate in inservice training programs as assigned; and
z.    Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or classroom teacher.
Specific software skills are not required but teaching and work systems are highly computerized so proficiencies or experience are beneficial.  
Qualifications for the position are:
a.    North Dakota Teacher's Certificate or equivalent; (not required)
b.    Enjoy working with and helping children;
c.    Able to take and follow direction;
d.    A desire to assist teachers and children to be successful in school;
e.    Knowledge of child growth, development, and behavior;
f.    Unique knowledge of the learning styles and difficulties of the at-risk student;
g.    Prior experience may be prerequisite; and
h.    Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
