Description:

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff - School Resource Office. This position is responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal laws and providing services to the general public in and around schools, as well as other facilities belonging to the Board of Education.

MAJOR DUTIES

  1. Performs specialized patrols for the school board at assigned school; enforces school rules in addition to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  2. Patrols school property for drug-related activities, gang-related activities, alcohol-related activities, truancy problems, improperly parked vehicles; conducts lighting surveys; addresses repetitive behavioral problems; follows up on non-major felony investigations and crimes.
  3. Attends school functions as security official while providing liaison duties between the affected school and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
  4. Prepares and presents lessons for students, teachers, staff, and parents on school safety, bicycle safety, and other law enforcement-related topics.
  5. Performs all tasks of a Deputy Sheriff as required.
  6. Enforces traffic laws; issues warnings and citations.
  7. Responds to calls for service.
  8. Identifies, pursues, and arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.
  9. Prepares required reports.
  10. Investigates automobile accidents; prepares accident reports.
  11. Provides aid to accident victims and others requiring assistance.
  12. Secures crime scenes and collects evidence; photographs or draws diagrams of crime scenes.
  13. Obtains and serves search and criminal warrants; apprehends and arrests suspects.
  14. Transports prisoners to court and other locations as assigned.
  15. Interview complainants, witnesses, victims, suspects, and informants.
  16. Attends required training sessions.
  17. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  18. Provides security at school and other special events.
  19. Escorts funerals and parades; provides traffic control at special events.
  20. Assists emergency response personnel at fire and emergency medical scenes.
  21. Maintains security during court sessions as assigned; provides security for courthouse and annex operations.
  22. Testifies in court as required.
  23. Performs related duties.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  1. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, county ordinances, criminal traffic laws, and agency policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of the boundaries and geography of the county.
  3. Knowledge of criminal investigation methods, practices, and equipment.
  4. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
  5. Skill in the use specialized law enforcement equipment.
  6. Skill in the operation of emergency vehicles.
  7. Skill in processing, analyzing and preserving evidence.
  8. Skill in operating emergency vehicles.
  9. Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  10. Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
  11. Skill in oral and written communication.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically in the field. The employee is exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment and safety devices.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Sworn Certified Peace Officer.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field is preferred; a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • More than one (1) year of related experience required.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Class C driver’s license.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
