General Statement
Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.
Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.
The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.
Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.
Duties and Responsibilities
Typical instructors will:
- Design and/or deliver Liberal Studies/ Liberal Studies Online courses, as assigned.
- If teaching online, complete specialised online training and regularly attend online workshops.
- Assist with curriculum and/or course development, when applicable.
- Collaborate with other faculty to ensure consistent standards across courses.
- Participate in faculty meetings when called.
- Participate in program and university assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Hold appropriate office hours/ availability for student questions and concerns.
- Meet & collaborate regularly with, and evaluate peer leaders/ mentors, if one is assigned to your section.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Master's degree in field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- PhD in field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
- Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses.
- Demonstrated knowledge of college student development.
- Terminal degree in field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.

- Non-Tenure Track Faculty - Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). - Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
- If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

Serving over 200 students, the Liberal Studies program cultivates intellectual and ethical judgment; prepares students for lives of civic engagement, social responsibility and leadership; integrates learning from different sources; develops skills to succeed in an increasingly global and varied society; and helps students deal effectively with complexity and ambiguity.
The Department
Montana State University's Liberal Studies program, located within the College of Letters & Science, provides undergraduate students with a broad, integrated and interdisciplinary learning experience. The program fosters connections among academic disciplines and draws on multiple areas of knowledge. Along with a number of related minors, three program options are offered: Quaternity (on-campus and also an online degree completion program option), Environmental Studies, and Global/Multicultural Studies.

The College of Letters & Science (CLS), the largest center for learning, teaching and research at Montana State University, offers students an excellent liberal arts and sciences education in nearly 50 majors, 25 minors and over 25 graduate degrees within the four areas of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematical, and social sciences.
