Department of Liberal Studies

College of Education and Integrative Studies

The Department of Liberal Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for Part-Time Lecturer positions in Liberal Studies and Interdisciplinary General Education programs.

About Cal Poly Pomona

Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn- by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model.

The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university's nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus's more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master's degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership.

About the College of Education and Integrative Studies

The College of Education and Integrative Studies is a learning community focused on meeting the present and future needs of students in its communities. The college educates students to become highly qualified and significant leaders in society. It is committed to the principles of diversity, ethics and social justice, and life-long learning. Central to the college's mission is innovation and integrative thinking, reflective practice, collaborative action, and learning by doing. The college's four departments include two undergraduate degrees and academic programs-Liberal Studies and Early Childhood Studies-and two graduate departments-Education and Educational Leadership. There are 1,376 students enrolled and 41 faculty in the college.

About the Department of Liberal Studies

Liberal Studies (LS) is one of two undergraduate departments in the College of Education and Integrative Studies (CEIS). The Department consists of the LS Program and Interdisciplinary General Education Program (IGE)-both of which highlight experiential or hands-on learning, interdisciplinarity, the tenets of a liberal education, and social justice and equity. The LS Program offers an undergraduate degree and is founded on teaching from liberal arts education principles and practices. The elementary education preparation option (Elementary Education: K-8 Pre-Credential) prepares subject matter competent candidates for a California elementary education (multiple subject) teaching credential program. The Interdisciplinary Studies option provides a foundation for students to enter careers in government, higher education, and the non-profit and corporate sectors and in fields like social work, counseling, law, and health, among others. See our website for more details.

The IGE program-a student-centered, discussion-based, cohort-based pathway-offering a unique option for some traditional GE courses to expand students' college and intellectual experience through an interdisciplinary approach. At the heart of IGE lies the concept of an integrated core: a curriculum that explores human experience across the multiple perspectives of different disciplines.  The IGE Program introduces participants to different ways of examining concepts and ideas, fostering a connective ability--a power to see all knowledge as interrelated. The program emphasizes learning in a community, writing, and applied learning activities and assignments.

The Position

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available.

Comprised of a multidisciplinary faculty, the LS Department provides an interdisciplinary education for undergraduate teacher candidates and students pursuing a liberal arts-based degree in disciplines related to their future educational paths or careers in fields such as law enforcement, social work, and healthcare. The department pedagogy is student-centered and experiential (e.g., discussion-based, service-learning) meant to model the university's inclusive polytechnic identity. Instruction focuses on developing students' proficiencies in critical thinking about and synthesizing arts, humanities, and social and natural science knowledge to understand age-old and emerging questions and issues relevant to our complex, global, information society, particularly in elementary education teachers' intellectual and subject-matter preparation, and in general education. The position requires teaching experience at the undergraduate level and an ability to teach critical thinking in an interdisciplinary context. Given the CSU system's new Student Success Framework, the department especially values candidates that can effectively address inclusivity and equity issues in the college classroom and teach socially diverse students. We are also interested in candidates who effectively incorporate critical approaches to artificial intelligence (AI) and can facilitate student's critical thinking and career development through connections between classroom learning and real-world environments.

We are broadly interested in student-centered instructors with specializations in:

  • The arts, humanities, and social science disciplines

We are especially interested in the specializations below:

  • Writing and composition
  • Ancient, medieval and/or early modern history and culture (globally conceived)
  • Cultural history
  • Art and visual culture
  • Myth/literature
  • American environmental history
  • Religious studies
  • Ethnic Studies

Responsibilities

Candidates should expect to teach in the following formats: in-person, hybrid synchronous, synchronous, and asynchronous and will need to be able to access the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal Master's Degree, Ed.D., or Ph.D., including ABD candidates in an academic discipline or interdisciplinary studies
  • Evidence of recent strong competence in undergraduate teaching at least 4 terms (not consecutive) of recent undergraduate teaching using an interdisciplinary approach
  • Evidence of proven ability to teach using active and experiential learning, critical theory, social justice pedagogy, or related approaches.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of ability to develop a sense of community in the classroom and strong rapport with students
  • Evidence of a strong command of instructional technology (Canvas, social media, iPads, etc.)
  • Evidence of an ability to teach in different modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous)
  • Evidence of a strong sense of collegiality
  • Evidence of an ability to assess teaching and learning effectiveness, receive feedback from colleagues, and revise instruction accordingly
