The Epic Database Administrator is responsible for the administration, performance, reliability, and lifecycle management of InterSystems Cache and IRIS databases supporting Epic EHR environments. This role ensures stability across production, nonproduction, disaster recovery, and reporting systems while supporting the organization's transition toward cloudbased Epic architectures. The DBA collaborates closely with application teams, infrastructure engineers, cloud architects, and operational leaders to maintain high availability, optimize system performance, and uphold healthcare technology standards.

I. Major Responsbilities:

Database Administration & Environment Management

  • Administer, maintain, and optimize InterSystems Cache/IRIS databases supporting Epic environments.
  • Create, configure, and manage ODB environments for production, DR, training, and reporting.
  • Monitor and tune performance across production and nonproduction systems.
  • Configure and manage environment refreshes, cloning, journaling, mirroring, backups, and recovery.
  • Manage IRIS/Cache internals including globals, locks, security settings, and storage strategies.

Cloud & Infrastructure Support

  • Support Epic cloud migration initiatives, particularly Azurehosted IRIS environments.
  • Configure IRIS mirror failover routines and update endpoints.
  • Collaborate with cloud operations to optimize compute, storage, and availability.

Upgrades, Patching & Lifecycle Maintenance

  • Apply Cache/IRIS and Epic upgrades.
  • Install and maintain monitoring tools such as System Pulse and RedAlert.
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.

Reliability, Monitoring & Incident Response

  • Monitor performance metrics, replication health, journal utilization, and alerts.
  • Troubleshoot complex Epic and IRIS/Cache issues.
  • Execute DR testing and business continuity procedures.
  • Develop automation and scripting to improve reliability.

II. Position Qualifications

License/Certification/Education:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
  • Epic ODBA or Epic IRIS certification.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.

Experience/Skills:

Required

  • 2+ years Healthcare IT experience supporting Epic environments.
  • Proficiency with Linux administration and enterprise monitoring tools.
  • Deep understanding of IRIS/Cache internals, replication, mirroring, and global structures.
  • Strong Unix/Linux administration and shell scripting skills.
  • Effective analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with Epic, infrastructure, and cloud teams.
  • Strong documentation discipline and ITIL knowledge.
  • Experience with cloud migrations, preferably Azure.
  • Knowledge of IRIS replication and DR strategies.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
