A legislative director works to create federal policy and resolve high-priority issues. They often work with an assistant and other agency staff to develop strategic plans to push legislative issues through to Congress. Job Description:The ASOSU Director of Policy serves on the ASOSU President's Policy Team to advocate for and support priorities aimed at improving tuition, food aordability, students wellbeing, community livability, social justice, and other priorities of concerns to the President and in service of the campus community. Policy advocacy includes communicating these priorities to local ocials, including those aliated with the county and city, and from time to time, the administration of the university itself. It also, importantly, includes interfacing with state and federal legislators to provide ASOSU and the student body At-Large a voice in legislative aairs. One of ASOSU's primary responsibilities to the OSU Student body is to represent students in areas of advocacy, and this position will play a signicant role in that aim.
This role will directly supervise the members of the ASOSU Policy Team
Position Duties:
Position Duties - Specify 5-7 key duties for advertising purposes. Work with the ASOSU President and Vice President to formalize a set of advocacy priorities and to discuss policy issues pertinent to OSU students in local, state, and federal government, and in University policymaking;
Help improve food accessibility on campus
Help executive branch leadership maintain strong relationships with student governments across the state, particularly on the issue of legislative and policy advocacy;
Facilitate and take part in ongoing communications between the ASOSU President, Vice President, the Associated Students of the Cascades Campus (ASCC) and the Government Relations Oce of Oregon State University, on shared priorities and student involvement;
Communicate with other stakeholders and advocates to build coalitions on issues aecting students and higher education;
Communicate with local, state, and federal representatives on policy priorities under the direction of the ASOSU President;
Track and record events pertinent to ASOSU's identied policy priorities, and particularly legislation and local government eorts;
Work in coordination with the ASOSU President and Vice President to extend requests to meet with public ocials, and wherever possible, to establish ongoing relationships between their oces and ASOSU, including but not limited to:
o County and/or city government ocials and sta,
o Oregon State legislators or sta,
o Members of the U.S. Congress or sta, in particular, members of Oregon's delegation;
Maintaining relationships with local ocials, which may include, but is not limited to:
o Corvallis City Councilors, Corvallis City sta,
o Committees or other groups within the City of Corvallis,
o Benton County Commissioners, Benton County sta,
o Oregon State legislators or sta,
o When appropriate, state-level ocials or entities outside of Oregon's Legislature,
o Members of the U.S. Congress or sta members of Oregon's delegation;
Invite public ocials to visit the OSU Corvallis campus and provide a forum for OSU student dialogue on public policy issues;
Support student attendance at advocacy days in Salem, on behalf of the ASOSU and in conjunction with external organizations, such as the Beaver Caucus, the University Legislative Scholars, or other interested parties;
Assist in providing opportunities for students to advocate on legislative and policy matters, and to provide feedback on these issues to student leadership;
Assist the ASOSU President and Vice President in organizing advocacy in Washington, D.C. (or, at least, on the federal level) on behalf of ASOSU and students at OSU;
Facilitate regular meetings with the Policy Team;
Meet regularly one-on-one with members of the Policy Team;
Attend regular all-executive sta and meetings;
Assist the Chief of Sta by providing relevant input during expenditure processes;
Provide a report to the ASOSU Senate at least once per term;
Serve as the primary point of contact for the ASOSU President's Policy Team in the ASOSU Executive Branch;
Serve and work on additional committees and campaigns, such as the Voter Registration Drive and ASOSU Elections;
Attend and successfully complete all required training sessions, including in-person sessions, online training and make-up assignments related to training;
Other duties as assigned
