Job description

MDU Resources Group, Inc. (NYSE: MDU) provides essential products and services through its regulated electric and natural gas distribution segments to more than 1.2 million customers across eight states, and its pipeline segment. The Company operates in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, constructing and operating infrastructure that delivers natural gas and electricity that energizes homes and businesses.

We are seeking a motivated and highly capable second year law student to join our Legal Department beginning in May 2027. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work directly with experienced in-house attorneys on meaningful legal matters affecting a publicly traded energy company and its regulated utility and pipeline businesses.

The successful candidate will gain practical, hands-on experience in areas that may include:

  • Utility and pipeline regulation.
  • Commercial contracts.
  • Litigation and dispute resolution.
  • Corporate governance and securities matters.
  • Employment law.
  • Environmental compliance.
  • Real estate transactions.
  • Government affairs.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Twelve-week internship from mid-May through August 2027.

  • Exposure to a broad range of legal disciplines and business operations.
  • Opportunities to attend meetings with business leaders and legal professionals.
  • In addition to hourly compensation, the intern may be eligible to apply for company-sponsored scholarship funding pursuant to program guidelines.
  • Campus housing may be available in the Bismarck area from mid-May through July at the intern’s expense. The company does not provide housing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Enrolled in an ABA-accredited Juris Doctor program.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Expect to complete at least two years of study before the internship begins in May 2027.
  • Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and communications skills.
  • Ability to work onsite at the company’s corporate office in Bismarck, North Dakota.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet individual and team deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally with attorneys, business clients, management, and external parties.
  • A business-minded, practical, and solution-oriented approach to legal work and internal client service. 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Interest in energy, utility, regulatory, environmental, corporate, litigation, or commercial law.
  • Experience with Westlaw and LexisNexis.
  • Previous legal, judicial, government, compliance, or business experience.
  • Demonstrated legal research and writing ability through coursework, moot court, law review, or an internship or externship.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will assist attorneys and legal staff on a variety of projects and matters, including:

  • Conducting legal research and preparing memoranda, summaries, and analyses.
  • Assisting with drafting and reviewing contracts and other legal documents.
  • Supporting litigation, regulatory proceedings, and administrative matters.
  • Reviewing proposed legislation, regulations, and agency actions affecting company operations.
  • Assisting with corporate governance, environmental, employment, real estate, and other legal matters.
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and materials for attorneys and management.
  • Attending meetings and preparing notes, minutes, or summaries as requested.
  • Presenting research findings and recommendations to attorneys and business stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Performing special projects and other assignments as needed.
