What is a legal aid?

A legal aid is a professional or organization that provides free or low-cost legal assistance to individuals who cannot afford to hire a private attorney. Legal aid helps people navigate legal issues such as housing disputes, family law matters, immigration, and access to public benefits. Their goal is to ensure equal access to justice for everyone, regardless of income. Legal aid services may be provided by lawyers, paralegals, or volunteers, and are often supported by government funding or nonprofit organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal aid?

To thrive as a Legal Aid, you typically need a background in law or paralegal studies, strong research abilities, and a good understanding of legal procedures. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and sometimes paralegal certification are valuable. Excellent communication, empathy, and organizational skills help in supporting clients from diverse backgrounds and collaborating with attorneys. These skills ensure effective client advocacy, accurate case preparation, and the delivery of accessible legal support to those in need.

What are some common challenges faced by legal aid professionals when assisting clients?

Legal aid professionals often encounter challenges such as managing high caseloads, working with limited resources, and addressing the urgent needs of clients who may be facing eviction, domestic violence, or immigration issues. Additionally, clients may have difficulty providing necessary documentation or may require extra support due to language barriers or trauma. Despite these challenges, legal aid professionals collaborate closely with colleagues, social workers, and community organizations to develop effective strategies for client advocacy and ensure access to justice.

Full Academic Year Clerkship with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Senior Law Unit

Position Type:
Unpaid Clerkship. MMLA does not provide compensation. If you are interested in receiving fellowship funding, a grant, or academic credit, please coordinate those arrangements through your school and let us know the requirements. We are happy to work with you.

Location:
Minneapolis

Introduction:
MMLA is seeking a law student intern for the full academic year.

This is a hybrid position. Most work will be conducted remotely using MMLA-issued laptops and accounts. In-person work will take place at our downtown Minneapolis office and may also occur at community partner locations.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to gain practical legal experience while giving back to their communities.

Why MMLA?

  • MMLA provides all clerks with robust training and practical learning opportunities to help build their skills.
  • We are not just checking boxes. We are genuinely committed to diversity. Bring your unique identity, experiences, and perspectives. We value them all.
  • Our mission is equal justice for all. In your cover letter, tell us how your background can help advance this mission.
  • Discrimination and harassment have no place here. We are committed to building a respectful and supportive workplace where everyone can thrive.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, and it is critical that we incorporate these values into every aspect of our work. We recognize the significant and harmful impact of racism, as well as Minnesota’s racial disparities, on MMLA’s clients and staff. Therefore, we devote special attention to advancing racial justice.

Expected Time Commitment

  • 4 to 5 hours per week for internships without pay or academic credit.
  • If the internship is paid or for academic credit, students must complete the required number of hours for the applicable program.
  • Students will not be expected to work during school breaks or when MMLA offices are closed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Complete onboarding and training.
  • Assist with intake and case management.
  • Manage a small caseload of assigned matters.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Draft legal pleadings and other documents.
  • Assist with unit-specific projects.
  • If appropriate cases are available, assist with litigation.

Current Law School Year

2Ls and 3Ls are welcome to apply.

Preferred Qualifications
