Full Academic Year Clerkship with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Senior Law Unit

Unpaid Clerkship. MMLA does not provide compensation. If you are interested in receiving fellowship funding, a grant, or academic credit, please coordinate those arrangements through your school and let us know the requirements. We are happy to work with you.

Introduction:
MMLA is seeking a law student intern for the full academic year.

This is a hybrid position. Most work will be conducted remotely using MMLA-issued laptops and accounts. In-person work will take place at our downtown Minneapolis office and may also occur at community partner locations.

Expected Time Commitment

• 4 to 5 hours per week for internships without pay or academic credit.
• If the internship is paid or for academic credit, students must complete the required number of hours for the applicable program.
• Students will not be expected to work during school breaks or when MMLA offices are closed.

Primary Responsibilities

• Complete onboarding and training.
• Assist with intake and case management.
• Manage a small caseload of assigned matters.
• Conduct legal research.
• Draft legal pleadings and other documents.
• Assist with unit-specific projects.
• If appropriate cases are available, assist with litigation.

Current Law School Year

2Ls and 3Ls are welcome to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to public interest work.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles.
• Work, volunteer, or lived experience with diverse economic, social, rural, and/or cultural communities.
• Fluency in one or more additional languages is highly valued. Please highlight this skill in your application.
