Legal Account Manager information

What is a legal account manager?

Legal Account Managers are professionals who act as liaisons between law firms or legal departments and their clients. They are responsible for managing client accounts, ensuring client needs are met, and facilitating effective communication between legal teams and clients. Their duties often include overseeing billing, handling client inquiries, supporting business development, and ensuring client satisfaction with legal services. This role requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as a good understanding of legal processes and terminology.

How does a legal account manager typically collaborate with legal and finance teams within an organization?

A Legal Account Manager often acts as a liaison between clients and internal legal and finance departments, ensuring client needs are met while complying with regulatory and billing requirements. They coordinate contract negotiations, manage billing processes, and help resolve any disputes or questions related to legal services. Regular communication with attorneys, paralegals, and finance professionals is essential to keep projects on track and clients informed. This collaboration helps streamline workflows and improve client satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Account Manager, you need a strong understanding of legal industry practices, account management expertise, and typically a degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, contract management systems, and legal billing platforms is important for daily operations. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills set you apart in this client-facing role. These abilities ensure effective client service, accurate contract execution, and the growth of business relationships within a legal context.

Strategic Account Manager

Sparks Group

Vienna, VA • On-site

$130K - $170K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 10 days ago

Job description

Sparks Group has partnered with a rapidly growing technology organization supporting the U.S. Federal Government to identify an experienced Strategic Account Manager. This is a senior-level, customer-facing position responsible for managing the long-term commercial success of key Federal customer accounts after contract award. Unlike traditional sales roles, this position is focused on strengthening existing customer relationships, ensuring contract success, driving account growth, and supporting renewals—not new business development.

The ideal candidate has experience managing complex Federal customer relationships, understands the Federal acquisition lifecycle, and excels at building trusted partnerships across government organizations. Active Secret security clearance required; Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance is strongly preferred

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary commercial relationship manager for an assigned portfolio of U.S. Federal Government accounts.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with program managers, contracting officers, CORs, acquisition professionals, and executive stakeholders.
  • Develop strategic account plans focused on customer satisfaction, retention, and long-term growth.
  • Oversee the commercial health of assigned accounts, including contract administration, revenue tracking, invoicing support, payment milestones, and financial performance.
  • Coordinate contract modifications, option exercises, renewals, and recompete planning.
  • Identify account expansion opportunities and collaborate with Business Development teams to support growth initiatives within existing customers.
  • Partner closely with Program Management, Engineering, Finance, Contracts, and Legal teams to ensure alignment throughout the contract lifecycle.
  • Monitor commercial and contractual risks and proactively drive issue resolution.
  • Represent the organization during customer meetings, executive briefings, program reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Advocate for customer needs internally while maintaining strong communication across cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain awareness of customer priorities, mission objectives, funding environments, and evolving program requirements.

Qualifications/Background Profile:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in Account Management, Customer Success, Program Management, Business Development, or a related customer-facing role supporting U.S. Federal Government customers.
  • Experience managing strategic customer relationships within the Department of Defense (DoD), Intelligence Community, Homeland Security, civilian agencies, or Federal Systems Integrators.
  • Strong understanding of the Federal acquisition process, government contracting, FAR/DFARS, and contract lifecycle management.
  • Experience supporting complex technology, software, SaaS, data analytics, geospatial, intelligence, aerospace, defense, or mission-focused solutions.
  • Proven ability to manage executive-level customer relationships and navigate complex stakeholder environments.
  • Experience supporting contract renewals, recompetes, account expansion, and commercial performance.
  • Strong communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across technical, operational, financial, and legal teams.
  • Experience working within high-growth technology organizations is highly preferred.
  • Active Secret security clearance required; Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance is strongly preferred.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
