Position: Day Camp Coordinator
Job Type: Full-time, Seasonal

Schedule: Monday - Friday, daytime camp hours, some evenings and weekends may be required. Must be available to work through the end of August.

Working Conditions: Busy, dynamic environment, indoors and outdoors, with regular off-site field trips.

General Function:
The Day Camp Coordinator assists with the overall administration and daily operation of the YMCA Day Camp program under the supervision of the Youth Program Manager. This role oversees day-to-day camp activities, provides staff leadership and supervision, coordinates daily schedules, manages supplies, communicates with families, and ensures compliance with YMCA standards and policies. This seasonal position may provide opportunities for continued employment through internal openings across the organization as they become available.

Key Responsibilities

Program Quality & Child Experience

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of summer day camp programming.
  • Manage camp operations, including daily schedules, program structure, child supervision, field trips, meal times, and overall camper safety.
  • Facilitate camp activities and experiences that are developmentally appropriate and reflect children's interests and needs.
  • Design and maintain engaging camp environments that support social-emotional development, creativity, and exploration.
  • Develop strong, trusting relationships with children and families, keep parents/guardians informed through regular communication, and ensure concerns are addressed promptly and thoughtfully.

Staff Leadership & Supervision

  • Be on the premises for the majority of hours that camp is provided each day; if temporarily absent, designate a competent staff member who meets lead counselor qualifications.
  • Observe, mentor, and support staff through ongoing feedback and coaching.
  • Assist with staff recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
  • Serve as direct camp staff when needed to maintain appropriate ratios.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings and ensure completion of all YMCA-required online trainings.

Safety, Compliance, & Administration

  • Uphold YMCA policies and procedures related to supervision, safety, mandated reporting, risk management, and professional boundaries with youth.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for children, staff, and the program, including attendance, emergency, medical, and incident reporting.
  • Ensure safe food service practices that meet USDA and CACFP standards.
  • Purchase snacks and site supplies while staying within budgetary guidelines and assist with program budget oversight.
  • Assist with registrations, enrollment, and fee collection processes.
  • Perform general housekeeping tasks to ensure the site remains clean, safe, organized, and welcoming.

Additional Expectations

  • Complete all YMCA onboarding trainings within designated timeframes.
  • Maintain accurate and organized program records, including staff files and child attendance records.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts and YMCA initiatives when applicable, including the annual campaign and special events.
  • Report any policy violations or suspicious behavior in accordance with mandated reporting requirements.
  • Flexible availability, including occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be 18 years of age or older - 21 preferred
  • 1-2 years of experience working with children or youth required. Experience in a camp, outdoor education, or informal learning environment preferred.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including managing group dynamics, supporting staff, and building positive relationships with children and families.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to safety and emergency situations.
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to delegate tasks as needed.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, emotional stability, physical capability, and a strong understanding of child development to meet the needs of children.
  • Ability to pass background and reference checks.
  • Basic functional computer skills.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Able and willing to complete an online Child Abuse Prevention training and other YMCA required trainings within the first week of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience in a leadership, supervisory, administrative, or management role.
  • Associates degree or higher in education, child development, outdoor education, recreation management, or related field.
  • 25 years of age or older for YMCA vehicle driver eligibility.
  • Familiarity with DCYF childcare licensing processes and regulations as this position offers the opportunity to gain experience that may lead to leadership roles in licensed childcare programs.

  • Driving record that meets or exceeds YMCA standards, a driver records request will be submitted.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to bend at the waist to pick up supplies, sit on the floor, play games, and perform daily cleaning tasks
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distance in normal and loud situations
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment
  • Vision capabilities are adequate to monitor the youth in the program
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange and gather information, and provide assistance to youth and parents/guardians in the program
