Job Description:

As the Physics Lab Assistant, you will contribute to a safe, organized, and inquiry-driven learning environment that supports practical physics learning for science and non-science major students. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset are essential.

1. Operational Support

  • Maintaining organized, functional, and well-stocked physics laboratory.
  • Regularly audit and restock laboratory supplies, including safety equipment and commonly used materials.
  • Monitor laboratory readiness and communicate resource or maintenance needs to the Lab instructor.

2. Support Laboratory Preparation & Breakdown

  • Prepare equipment and materials for laboratory activities as directed by the Lab instructor and physics faculty.
  • Support laboratory setup, breakdown, and cleanup processes.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned, maintained, and returned to appropriate storage locations following use.
  • Assist with the movement and distribution of laboratory materials between preparation spaces and designated experiment place.

3. Maintain Equipment & Resources

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment according to established procedures.
  • Assist the Lab Instructor with specialized laboratory preparations and technical tasks.
  • Support inventory tracking and organization of laboratory materials and equipment.

4. Support Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Assist in maintaining laboratory safety standards and procedures.
  • Ensure Safety Data Sheets and other required safety documentation are available and accessible.
  • Support safe storage, handling, and disposal procedures for laboratory materials.
  • Respond to laboratory incidents and concerns in accordance with established University safety protocols.
  • Assist with annual inventory audits of laboratory equipment.

5. Support Teaching & Learning

  • Assist physics faculty during laboratory activities when requested.
  • Support student safety and proper equipment use during practical learning experiences.

6. Engage in Professional Learning & Collaboration

  • Attend meetings and required professional learning activities.
  • Collaborate positively with faculty and staff.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and a commitment to student safety and well being.
  • Support the mission, vision, and values of Mercer University

Must be a current Mercer University student in good standing. Candidates must have B+ or better grades in General Physics courses. Core requirements vary but typically include equipment handling, data software proficiency, and safety protocol compliance.
