Learning Assistant information

What is a learning assistant?

Learning Assistants are individuals who support students and instructors in educational settings, often in classrooms or labs. They help facilitate group activities, answer student questions, and provide additional guidance to enhance learning. Learning Assistants are typically undergraduate students trained to use active learning techniques to improve student engagement and understanding. Their role is to create a positive and supportive learning environment, working alongside faculty to help students succeed.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a learning assistant?

To thrive as a Learning Assistant, you generally need a solid understanding of educational principles, subject matter expertise, and at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with some positions requiring postsecondary education. Familiarity with classroom technology, learning management systems (LMS), and digital collaboration tools is often important. Exceptional communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and support students are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure effective support of teachers and students, fostering an inclusive and productive learning environment.

How do learning assistants typically collaborate with teachers and students in the classroom?

Learning Assistants work closely with teachers to support lesson delivery, often helping to facilitate group activities, provide one-on-one assistance to students, and manage classroom dynamics. They play a key role in reinforcing concepts presented by the teacher, answering student questions, and identifying individuals who may need additional help. Collaboration also involves regular communication with the teaching staff to discuss student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed. This teamwork ensures a supportive and effective learning environment for all students.

Job description

Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Full-Time Registered Nurse

Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch is unlike any place you have worked! We are a place of hope where troubled kids and their families find professional care, compassionate expertise, and new possibilities. In short, we help the kids no one else can—we help them find and become who they are. We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Full-Time Registered Nurse at our Fargo campus! We offer a very flexible schedule, which requires working one shift per week until 9 p.m. and on-call rotations during the week and weekends.

Starting Wage: $33.00 to $40+ DOE. Wages start at $31 for entry-level nurses and increase depending on prior work experience as a Registered Nurse.

What You Will Do: As a Ranch Nurse, you will draw on your skills to connect with, support, and educate children and adolescents, ages 10-18; and serve as a critical team member in our adolescent psychiatric residential facility. You will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to assess patient progress and modify treatment programs accordingly. This is a challenging environment where continual learning and autonomy is expected as you work to make a difference in the life of a child.

Purpose
  • Provide care to youth and their families in a respectful, caring, empowering, holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive manner. Demonstrate a commitment to agency mission, vision, and shared values
  • Display respect for all voices, all cultures and all perspectives
  • Help establish team collaborative decisions to promote youth independence and success
  • Promote an environment that supports accomplishments and self-esteem, as well as empowerment and accountability
  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to provide a person-centered plan of care and sense of well-being, while advocating for the youth and family's best interests.
Caring
  • Initiate nursing presence and role-modeling by attending youth-focused meetings, being dependable, and following through with tasks
  • Ensure client's physical/mental health needs are met by ensuring health assessments, routine health care, nursing procedures, and face-to-face evaluations are completed within accredited time frames, and appropriate referrals are made when needed.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assist providers while seeing clients. Observe and carry out orders as indicated and perform appropriate interventions as ordered.
  • Create caring relationships with our youth by attending activities, assisting with outside appointments, and implementing nursing groups to provide education
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, with the ability to return to campus within one hour to provide guidance and complete appropriate assessment and paperwork
  • Participate in medical/psychiatric emergencies and assess, treat, and triage in a timely and appropriate manner
Learning
  • Assist youth by providing knowledge of healthcare management to ensure youth and families experience positive outcomes and long-term success.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assist providers while seeing clients. Observe and carry out orders as indicated and perform appropriate interventions as ordered.
  • Establish and role-model positive relationships through greeting youth and staff and engaging in learning moments collaboratively
  • Provide education to clients or staff as needed concerning issues of general health, medications, growth and development, hygiene, infection, and nutrition.
  • Actively seek opportunities to share knowledge and expertise with team members, focusing on formal learning opportunities as well as informal coaching moments
Qualifications

The successful applicant must have:

  • A current and valid North Dakota Registered Nurse license.
  • One year of experience in a mental or behavioral healthcare setting preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • History of reliability, patience, and professionalism.
