Job description

OVERVIEW

JOB TITLE:Digital Learning Assistant LOCATION: St. Paul OSF STELAR lower level (LL20B)PAY RATE: $16.50/hrHOURS: 20 hours/week

The Digital Learning Assistant helps students and employees learn to create digitally accessible content, incorporate AI into accessibility efforts, and develop skills to include technology in meaningful ways. This person also manages the Digital Accessibility Learning Lab space in OSF LL20B. The Digital Learning Assistant position seeks someone with a passion for working with people to help them to learn digital accessibility, ethical AI use, and other digital competencies that can make a positive difference in our daily lives, career paths, and in the world. The positions reports to the Digial Learning Success Manager (ITS/STELAR).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide a welcoming environment in the physical Learning Lab space (St Paul campus), virtual appointments, and a professional approach in communications.
  • Assist employees and students with accessible document remediation support, and help teach others accessible practices.
  • Create documentation or tutorials (with others on the team) to describe ways to use AI and digital accessibility together.
  • Organized with badge course facilitation (designated lead in one course, assist with other badge courses).
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of where to locate resources for current technology resources (especially digital accessibility, assistive technology, and AI).
  • Meet regularly and maintain work communication with supervisor in person and via Microsoft Teams; and initiate communication with other team members.
  • Create monthly communications (e.g., Tommie Link, OneStThomas, social media) to further share impact stories in our work.
  • Organize small group sessions to gain additional perspectives on what is working and ways to improve our St. Thomas digital learning aptitude and success.
  • Must follow all rules around FERPA, confidentiality, academic integrity, and ethical use of AI.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Either undergraduate or graduate students are eligible as long as you can complete 15 out of the 20 hours during the daytime at our St Paul office (with flexible location or hours for 5 of those hours). 
  • Pursuing or holding a degree in education, computer science, marketing, communication studies, or a related field is preferred but not a requirement.
  • Ability to take initiative, follow through, and complete multiple projects at one time.
  • Curiosity about learning, accessibility, AI, and how to incorporate technology into our lives in meaningful ways.
  • Experience in using various Microsoft Office applications and other online technologies.
  • Ability to think creatively and problem-solve with others about technology use.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Skill in using Canva, and screenshot and screen capture software preferred.
  • Complete several digital badge trainings during or before first two weeks of employment, and other trainings during the first month on the job.   
  • Complete office tasks and additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

  • Develop skills creating digitally accessible content and other innovative teaching and learning practices that incorporate technology.
  • Gather experience in both internal and external communications in a Higher Ed context.
  • Grow leadership skills - student employee will have opportunities to lead initiatives.
  • Expand accessibility, inclusive practices, and AI skills across various types of communications, digital tools, and settings (including both in person and virtual).

Consider completing the Digital Accessibility Basics badge and Getting Started with Generative AI badge courses prior or during the application process. This is optional and does not guarantee an interview, but will provide you with a better understanding of the job focus. 

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
