Job description

Location: Lake Forest, CA | Schedule: Full-Time, 100% Onsite | Pay: $40–$50/hour DOE

TheLender is seeking a Mortgage Underwriting Trainer to join our team in Lake Forest, CA. In this full-time, 100% onsite role, you will use your mortgage underwriting expertise to train both new and experienced underwriters, lead hands-on file review sessions, and help build the next generation of underwriting talent through our Underwriter University program.

This is a training-focused role with no production underwriting quota. If you are an experienced underwriter who enjoys mentoring others, explaining guidelines, and helping teammates work through complex files, this could be an excellent next step in your career.


What You’ll Do

·         Lead engaging, instructor-led underwriting training for new and experienced underwriters.

·         Conduct classroom instruction, workshops, and hands-on loan file review sessions.

·         Coach trainees through credit, income, asset, collateral, and guideline scenarios.

·         Translate complex underwriting guidelines into practical, easy-to-understand training.

·         Build and maintain training materials, presentations, job aids, and knowledge assessments.

·         Help develop and continuously improve TheLender’s Underwriter University curriculum.

·         Partner with Underwriting leadership and Learning & Development to identify training needs.

·         Keep curriculum current with changes to guidelines, products, systems, and processes.

·         Provide real-time coaching and support during and after training.

·         Support training related to Conventional, FHA, VA, Non-QM, and other mortgage products.

·         Help evaluate training effectiveness and improve programs based on trainee feedback and performance.

·         Use Microsoft 365 and Encompass or comparable LOS technology in training and daily activities.

What We’re Looking For:

Required Qualifications

·         3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience.

·         Strong knowledge of mortgage credit analysis and underwriting guidelines.

·        Desire and ability to teach, train and mentor

·         Strong communication, presentation, and classroom facilitation skills.

·         Ability to explain complex underwriting concepts clearly to different experience levels.

·         Experience with Encompass or another mortgage loan origination system.

·         Ability to work 100% onsite in Lake Forest, CA.

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience developing training curriculum, job aids, or assessments.

·         Non-QM underwriting experience.

·         Experience with a learning management system.

·         Experience working with Learning & Development teams.

·         Knowledge of mortgage compliance and regulatory requirements.
