What is a lean manager?

Lean managers identify areas in a business that can be streamlined to make processes and production more efficient. These changes are often small and incremental, but lean managers find ways to reduce areas that waste time, effort, or money, and make the overall functions of the business run more smoothly. As a lean manager, you need to understand how your company runs, the goals of production, and be able to connect with employees so that they are inspired to move towards the same efficiency objectives. You must know how to analyze data, dissect small and large processes of your business, and provide practical ways to cut unnecessary waste.

How does a lean manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive process improvements?

A Lean Manager regularly works with cross-functional teams—such as operations, quality, engineering, and supply chain—to identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements. This involves facilitating workshops, guiding value stream mapping sessions, and coaching team members on Lean principles. Effective collaboration requires strong communication skills to align different departments toward common goals and ensure that changes are sustained over time. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, Lean Managers help teams break down silos and achieve greater efficiency together.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lean manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lean Manager, you need expertise in process improvement methodologies, strong analytical skills, and typically a background in engineering, operations, or business management. Familiarity with Lean tools such as Value Stream Mapping, Six Sigma, and experience with ERP systems or continuous improvement certifications (like Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt) are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are crucial for driving change and engaging teams. These skills and qualifications enable Lean Managers to effectively streamline processes, reduce waste, and foster a culture of continuous improvement within organizations.

What is the difference between Lean Manager vs Continuous Improvement Coordinator?

The Lean Manager will be a grounded, roll-up-your-sleeves engineering/operations leader who thrives in the details but thinks at the enterprise level. They've led teams through change, built structure where it was missing, and brought calm to the chaos-putting real systems in place around safety, accountability, and throughput. This person knows how to engage the workforce, hold a high bar, and get people aligned without losing the culture. They'll be a daily presence on the floor, a strong communicator, and a thoughtful partner to the Operations and Engineering Leadership Team-someone who can scale teams, capacity, and infrastructure while keeping quality and performance on track.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lean Deployment & Continuous Improvement: Be the internal champion for lean. Apply lean thinking in a practical, grounded way. Certification (green/black belt) is helpful, but experience embedding lean tools on the floor matters more.
  • Facilitate lean workshops that allow the teams to be part of the solution development; ask probing, meaningful questions that guide teams toward continuous improvement; follow up and follow through on actions and concerns to build trust and drive accountability starting with yourself.
  • People Leadership & Culture: Be a visible, floor-present leader. Motivate people, model accountability, and develop a plant culture where performance and respect go hand in hand. Mentor team members and build up the next generation-several retirements are on the horizon.
  • Growth Planning & Scalability: Prepare the operation to scale-doubling output and expanding the workforce. Support long-term expansion planning.
  • Operations Partnership: Work closely with the Operations and Engineering Leadership Team on day-to-day execution and long-term planning. Bring sound judgment, presence, and financial awareness-this role could be a stepping stone.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Work Experience:
  • Minimum of 10-15 years in manufacturing operations; 5 years in management
  • "Heavy industrial" type manufacturing, complex large format assembly environments, heavy equipment/industrial contracting, or other related experience.
  • Track record of embedding lean tools, visual management, and safety systems
  • Has led plant teams of 100-300+ through lean tactics implementation and scaled operations
  • Strong manufacturing acumen-comfortable talking capacity, utilization, and key performance indicators
  • High EQ, high standards-known for coaching teams and driving continuous improvement
  • Green/black belt certification helpful, but real-world experience more important
  • Background in private equity or high-growth environments is a plus
  • Willing and able to relocate to Shreveport and be a consistent presence on-site
