The Lead Software Engineer (Nuke) is responsible for leading a small team of engineers, splitting time evenly between hands-on troubleshooting through our support ticket pipeline and tool development. This role is the senior technical resource to artists and supervisors for Nuke and Ingest/Delivery-related issues, and is responsible for mentoring the team, reviewing merge requests, and ensuring recurring support issues are turned into lasting tool improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Triage, prioritize, and resolve incoming support tickets from compositing artists in a timely manner, escalating and delegating as needed

  • Lead and mentor a team of ~5 pipeline engineers, setting priorities and providing technical guidance

  • Review merge requests to maintain code quality, consistency, and pipeline best practices across the team

  • Troubleshoot artist tool issues, diagnosing root causes and delivering effective fixes

  • Develop and maintain efficient and creative workflows and tools for compositing artists based on recurring support needs

  • Work daily with the pipeline management team to identify and implement existing and new features

  • Lead daily scrum meetings and manage the team's ticket status and blockers

  • Write and review technical design memos and user documentation, including support-facing knowledge base articles

  • Identify early areas of improvement and escalate issues to management as needed

Qualifications

  • Passion for staying on top of latest features in Nuke

  • 8+ years experience writing Nuke pipeline code using Python

  • Understanding of Color Science

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a customer-service mindset toward supporting artists

  • Track record of leading effective software development and support teams in VFX

  • Experience reviewing code and mentoring junior to mid-level engineers

  • Track record of triaging and resolving technical support issues in a fast-paced production environment

  • Demonstrated talent for designing intuitive, artist-friendly workflows without sacrificing functionality

  • Understanding of object-oriented programming patterns

  • Comfortable with git and unit testing

  • Comfortable working within a Jira ticketing system and managing a variable support workload alongside development tasks

  • Desire to probe and understand the inner workings of complex systems

  • Basic DCC familiarity with Houdini, Maya

  • Experience with PyQt or PySide preferred

$150,000 - $185,000 CAD a year

This salary range is specific to applicants applying to our position in Vancouver, BC. To determine your base salary, we consider your qualifications, skills, and experience. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary outside of this range and will also be dependent on your location.
