What is the difference between Lead Av vs AV Technician?

AspectLead AVAV Technician
CredentialsTypically requires experience in AV systems, certifications like CTS, and leadership skillsRequires technical training or certifications such as CTS or similar
Work EnvironmentOversees AV setups, manages teams, and coordinates large events or installationsPerforms hands-on installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of AV equipment
Industry UsageUsed in corporate, event production, and large venue settingsCommonly employed in similar environments for technical support

The main difference is that Lead AV roles involve leadership, planning, and overseeing AV projects, while AV Technicians focus on technical installation and maintenance. Lead AV professionals typically have more experience and may hold certifications, whereas AV Technicians are more hands-on with equipment. Both roles are essential in AV projects, but Lead AV positions carry additional responsibilities for project management and team coordination.

What are some of the primary leadership challenges faced by a Lead Av and how can they be addressed?

As a Lead Av, one of the main challenges is effectively coordinating between technical AV team members and non-technical stakeholders, such as event organizers or clients. Balancing the demands of high-quality audio-visual delivery with tight deadlines and evolving requirements can be demanding. Successful Lead Avs foster clear communication, delegate tasks based on team strengths, and proactively address issues as they arise. Building strong relationships across departments and staying updated on the latest AV technologies also help in overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth operations.

What are Lead AVs?

Lead AVs, or Lead Audio-Visual Technicians, are professionals responsible for overseeing the installation, operation, and maintenance of audio-visual equipment for events, meetings, and presentations. They lead a team of AV technicians, coordinate with event organizers or clients, and ensure that all technical aspects run smoothly. Their duties often include troubleshooting technical issues, setting up sound systems, projectors, lighting, and providing on-site support during events. Strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and attention to detail are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead AV, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead AV (Audio Visual), you need expertise in AV system design, installation, troubleshooting, and a strong background in electronics or related fields, often supported by certifications like CTS (Certified Technology Specialist). Familiarity with control systems (such as Crestron or Extron), video conferencing platforms, and audio mixing consoles is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and ensuring smooth project execution. These competencies ensure high-quality AV solutions, client satisfaction, and the seamless coordination of complex technical projects.

Job description

Company Overview

We are partnering with a growing residential AV integration firm that is redefining quality and professionalism in the custom installation space. This small but mighty team is building a high-performing foundation of talent dedicated to delivering top-tier smart home and audio/video experiences. Known for their commitment to technical excellence, craftsmanship, and transparency, theyโ€™re seeking team members who are as passionate about this work as they are.

Why Join Us?

  • Shape the Foundation:ย Be part of building a top-tier install team from the ground upโ€”your input matters, and youโ€™ll have a real say in how things are done.
  • Entrepreneurial Freedom with Support:ย Enjoy the autonomy to run your own truck and make decisions, while still having the backing of an engaged and supportive owner.
  • No Micromanagement:ย Work in an environment where youโ€™re trusted to do your jobโ€”this team values initiative, not hand-holding.
  • Collaborative Culture:ย Leadership encourages input from the field and is actively seeking ideas to improve operations, SOPs, and overall efficiency.
  • Build, Donโ€™t Just Install:ย Help design and refine systems, not just plug them inโ€”this is an opportunity to contribute to process and product.
  • Tight-Knit Team:ย Join a team where you wonโ€™t get lost in the shuffleโ€”every person plays a vital role, and your impact is visible.
  • Ethical, Human-First Leadership:ย Expect paid time off for life events, generous holiday breaks, and respect for your personal timeโ€”this owner walks the talk on valuing his people.
  • Growth Opportunity:ย For the right person, thereโ€™s potential to grow into management or even a strategic leadership role with future equity options.
  • Work with a Leader Who Gets It:ย The owner has done it all and knows how hard the job can beโ€”he's hands-on, honest, and committed to doing things differently (and better) than the industry norm.

Job Overview

Weโ€™re looking for a seasoned Level 3 AV Technician (or a very strong Level 2 ready to level up) whoโ€™s ready to take full ownership of the install processโ€”from rough-in through trim, rack building, networking, and basic programming. Youโ€™ll run your own truck, manage your own timelines, and help shape a best-in-class field team alongside leadership that trusts your expertise. This is a role for someone whoโ€™s confident, competent, and ready to be a cornerstone of an elite install division.

Responsibilities

  • Execute high-end residential AV system installations: pre-wire, rack assembly, device placement, and final system tuning.
  • Install and configure networks, including access points, managed switches, and routers (primarily Access Networks and Ubiquiti).
  • Troubleshoot complex system issues with minimal guidance.
  • Handle on-site documentation, daily communication, and client interactions professionally and independently.
  • Contribute to SOP development and suggest process improvements.
  • Serve as a technical mentor to junior techs as the team grows.
  • Collaborate closely with leadership and future project managers to deliver excellence on every job.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in residential AV integration.
  • Deep working knowledge of Control4 (must), Savant (nice to have), and general control system architectures.
  • Strong understanding of system design, audio/video signal flow, and rack layout best practices.
  • Comfort with network setup and configuration; Ruckus/Araknis/Ubiquiti experience is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret AV design schematics and blueprints.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skillsโ€”able to think critically and solve problems independently.
  • Strong organizational habits and attention to detail.
  • Must be self-motivated, reliable, and able to perform under pressure.
  • Comfortable working in large custom homes and luxury residential environments.

Ideal Candidate Will Be

  • Confident without egoโ€”able to own their lane while collaborating well.
  • Obsessed with doing things the right way and not cutting corners.
  • Passionate about the craftโ€”someone whoโ€™s still learning, still dorking out on AV gear after hours.
  • Able to work independently and doesnโ€™t need hand-holding.
  • Hungry to help shape a company culture and bring new ideas to the table.

Compensation & Structure

  • $33 โ€“ $45/hourย based on experience and programming ability.
  • 1099 or W-2 availableโ€”your choice.
  • Premium paid holidays and generous PTO, including extended time off around major holidays.
  • Discretionary bonuses and Christmas bonus.
  • Holiday office shutdown (paid).
  • Growth path toward lead tech, project management, or operations depending on your goals.

Location & Travel

  • Candidates must beย local to Marylandย (within 1 hour of Annapolis or the Eastern Shore).
  • Daily job sites are located throughout the DMV region; regular on-site presence is required.
