About Us
Middle Georgia State University (MGA), a multi-campus, baccalaureate and graduate degree-granting public institution, is the most affordable public state university in Georgia. MGA has five campuses-Macon, Cochran, Dublin, Eastman, and Warner Robins, all located in central Georgia-and global outreach through its fully-online campus. Its enrollment of 8,400 students is largely comprised of students from most of Georgia's 159 counties. The University has six academic schools, including Georgia's flagship aviation program, that support its mission to educate and graduate inspired, lifelong learners whose scholarship and careers enhance the state.
Job Summary
The Academic Success Coach is a full-time staff position in The Student Success Center. The Academic Success Coach is a collaborative services role focused on retention management, outreach, and early intervention for at risk students. Responsibilities include assisting and guiding students in completion efforts. Coaches also assist students with building necessary skills to become successful and self-directed lifelong learners. The Academic Success Coach mentors and guides students, recommends specific tutor content, and identifies other resources as needed. The Academic Success Coach will also supervise supplemental instruction or other support initiatives as requested by the Director.
Responsibilities
Educational Support and Success Strategies -
Provides mentoring and coaching, and/or tutoring for students to develop and accomplish their personal, academic, and professional goals.
Assists at risk students in creating an Academic Improvement Plan (AIP).
Assists with the development of course materials and presentations to support individual and focus group sessions.
Develops and implements procedures for monitoring and assessing students' progress in accordance with academic success guidelines.
Assists students regarding time management, goal setting/achievement, note taking, test prep and online learning.
Performs outreach to academic classrooms to promote success strategies and identify services of the Student Success Center.
Student Engagement -
Engages students by performing outreach campaigns which can include one-on-one meetings to improve engagement and ensure success.
Refers students to appropriate support services as necessary.
Attends University activities and events to interact with students, faculty, and staff.
Caseload Management -
Maintains accurate/updated records of outreach campaigns and students who have sought assistance.
Maintains accurate records of success coaching materials.
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree with a high level of success.
Other Required Qualifications
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Possess excellent customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience
Experience with mentoring, advising, career counseling, and/or providing student services in a higher education setting.
Experience in providing academic support to students and developing mentor programs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of coaching, instructional and mentoring techniques.
Ability to work with a population of students, lead groups, act independently, take initiative and promote innovation.
Ability to problem-solve to resolve issues, multi-task and manage stressful work demands effectively.
Must have the ability to perform detail-oriented work by developing and maintaining accurate reports and records.
Excellent skills in communication (written, oral, and interpersonal), collaboration, learning strategies, planning and time management, problem analysis, and resolution.
