Job description

Position Title: CHST Supervisor – Airport Operations (Night Shift)
Department: Safety & Operations
Reports To: Project Manager / Operations Manager
Location: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and surrounding airport facilities
Shift: Night Shift (Typical hours: 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM, schedule may vary based on project needs)


Position Summary

The CHST Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all health and safety activities for assigned airport construction, relocation, logistics, and operational projects during the night shift. This position ensures compliance with OSHA regulations, client safety requirements, airport security procedures, and company policies while serving as the primary safety representative on-site.

The CHST Supervisor works closely with project managers, contractors, airport stakeholders, and field personnel to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and promote a strong safety culture throughout each project.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily job site safety inspections and document findings.
  • Lead pre-shift safety meetings, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and toolbox talks.
  • Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, LAWA, airline, and client safety requirements.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and unsafe work practices and implement immediate corrective actions.
  • Stop work when imminent hazards or unsafe conditions exist.
  • Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by all personnel.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, injuries, and property damage events, completing required documentation and corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate with project managers, contractors, airline representatives, and airport personnel regarding safety concerns.
  • Perform regular audits of work zones, equipment, barricades, pedestrian pathways, and traffic control measures.
  • Maintain daily safety reports, inspection logs, corrective action reports, and project documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with airport security procedures, badge requirements, and access control policies.
  • Mentor and coach employees on safe work practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with emergency response activities when required.
  • Participate in client meetings and provide safety updates and recommendations.
  • Monitor subcontractor compliance with project safety requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification (required).
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (required).
  • Minimum of 3 years of construction safety experience.
  • Experience working on active construction or airport projects preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to prepare detailed reports using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain airport security clearance and required badges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
  • Experience working at commercial airports.
  • Knowledge of LAWA safety requirements and airport operational procedures.
  • Experience with construction logistics, relocations, and operational safety.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and navigate active construction sites.
  • Ability to wear required PPE throughout the shift.

Working Conditions

  • Night shift with weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency response as needed.
  • Fast-paced airport environment with active construction and operational activities.
  • Exposure to noise, heavy equipment, moving vehicles, aircraft operations, and changing environmental conditions.
