What is a law writer?

Law writers are professionals who specialize in drafting, editing, and reviewing legal documents such as statutes, regulations, contracts, and legal publications. They translate complex legal concepts into clear, precise language for use by lawmakers, lawyers, and the general public. Law writers often work for government agencies, law firms, or legal publishing companies and must have a strong understanding of legal terminology and procedures.

What are some common challenges faced by law writers when interpreting complex legal documents?

Law writers often encounter challenges when translating intricate legal language into clear, accessible content. Interpreting statutes, regulations, or case law requires thorough research and a keen attention to detail to ensure accuracy. Additionally, law writers must balance clarity with precision, avoiding ambiguity while adhering closely to legal terminology. Regular collaboration with attorneys or subject matter experts is essential to resolve uncertainties and maintain the integrity of the information.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a law writer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Law Writer, you typically need a strong background in legal research, excellent written communication skills, and a degree in law or a related field. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), citation standards, and document management systems is crucial. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to convey complex legal concepts in clear language are essential soft skills. These qualifications ensure accuracy, clarity, and credibility in legal documentation, which are vital for effective legal communication and compliance.

What is the difference between Law Writer vs Paralegal?

AspectLaw WriterParalegal
CredentialsLegal education, writing skillsLegal studies, certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentLegal firms, publishing companiesLaw firms, corporate legal departments
Job FocusLegal content creation, document draftingLegal research, case preparation

Law Writers primarily focus on creating legal content and drafting documents, often requiring strong writing skills and legal knowledge. Paralegals assist attorneys with research, case management, and document preparation, with a broader focus on legal support tasks. While both roles work within legal environments, Law Writers concentrate on content creation, whereas Paralegals support legal proceedings and casework.

How to get into legal writing?

To become a legal writer, develop strong writing and research skills, often through a bachelor's degree in law, legal studies, or related fields. Gaining experience with legal documents, such as briefs or contracts, and familiarizing yourself with legal terminology and style guides can improve your prospects. Building a portfolio and networking with legal professionals can also help you enter the field.

Job description

Welcome to The Freelance Firm!

We are a national network of experienced, high-level, freelance attorneys and paralegals who provide remote, on-demand support for both short-term and long-term legal projects for our client law firms.

Due to increased demand, we are now interviewing for a qualified, experienced, and dedicated Oklahoma Family Law Paralegal to provide ongoing support to a busy, growing family law practice.

This client has a substantial existing caseload and is looking for a paralegal who can become a dependable extension of their current team. The opportunity may begin with a more limited workload while the working relationship is established, with the potential to grow to up to 40 hours per week. There may ultimately be a need for multiple paralegals as the firm continues to grow.

Paralegal Responsibilities:
  • Provide high-level drafting support for active family law matters
  • Draft initial disclosures, discovery requests and responses, petitions, responses, protective orders, motions, and other family law pleadings
  • Assist with organizing and moving active family law cases forward
  • Communicate directly and professionally with clients regarding case status, outstanding information, documents, and next steps
  • Provide regular updates regarding file progress
  • Assist attorneys with case preparation and other substantive family law support
  • Work collaboratively with the firm's attorneys, paralegals, operations staff, and other team members
  • Take ownership of assigned work and proactively identify issues, next steps, and opportunities to improve case progression
Paralegal Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of substantive paralegal experience, with strong direct family law experience
  • Exceptional drafting ability is a MUST and is the primary requirement for this opportunity
  • Experience independently drafting substantive family law pleadings, discovery, motions, and related documents
  • Very strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, polished, high-quality work product
  • Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable making thoughtful suggestions, identifying potential issues, and bringing ideas to the legal team rather than simply waiting for instructions
  • Ability to work independently while integrating closely with an established legal team
  • Proactive, responsive, and dependable communicator
  • Strong client-management skills with the ability to communicate professionally and empathetically with clients navigating difficult and emotional family law matters
  • Polished and professional demeanor; the firm serves a high-end clientele and places significant importance on the client experience
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Professional, respectful, collaborative, and team-oriented
  • Comfortable receiving feedback and revisions while continuing to develop an understanding of the firm's preferred work product and processes
  • Experience with MyCase is highly preferred
  • Candidates with substantive family law writing samples available are strongly preferred

This is an excellent opportunity for a strong family law paralegal looking for a potentially substantial and long-term workload. The client has immediate work available to delegate and is looking to build a trusted relationship with the right professional.

Our Paralegal pay rate starts at $30/hour.

We welcome you to join our established network of legal professionals!

Please respond with your resume and, if available, family law writing samples, and we will contact you for a 30-minute online meeting in the next two days to answer all of your questions about The Freelance Firm and this opportunity.

Resume submissions will be kept in strict confidence.
