Job description

JOB TITLE: Substitute Teacher
STATUS: Part-time, Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Site Director
PROGRAM: Vaughn NCLC (K-12)
Organization Overview
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center ("Vaughn"), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district's low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students
  • Supervise students in a variety of school-related settings
  • Assess, monitor, and evaluate student outcomes
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community
  • Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students
  • Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and the emotional development of students
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence
  • Maintain appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Support the goals of the district by serving on special committees and other groups
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Demands
  • Be able to stand/walk around for prolonged periods of time
  • Lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Bending, Standing, and walking for extended periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Master's degree in subject matter field or Education is strongly preferred
  • Current California teaching credential, substitute permit or be enrolled in a credentialing/internship program at a college/university required
  • Solid knowledge of subject matter, including California State Standards and subject-specific frameworks and assessments
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Basic knowledge of computer/cell phone use
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing (English)
  • Team player with a demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain effective and cooperative professional relationships.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office365 applications, Microsoft Word, Excel and online data input software.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Possess a work ethic and personal belief system that aligns with the mission and vision of Vaughn Next Century Learning Center
  • Strong organizational skills; a self-starter who can prioritize and multi-task

Compensation and Benefits:
  • $37.00 an hour, or $38.00 an hour (after 20 consecutive days for a long-term assignment) (FY 23-24)

Additional Information
Upon receiving an offer of employment:
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
  • Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
  • Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
