What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Laser Weapon Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Laser Weapon Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, optics, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field. Expertise in simulation software, laser safety certifications, and familiarity with systems such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, or military-grade control systems are commonly required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and precise communication skills are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the safe, effective development and integration of advanced laser weapon technologies in complex defense environments.

What is the difference between Laser Weapon Systems Engineer vs Radar Systems Engineer?

AspectLaser Weapon Systems EngineerRadar Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, specialized training in laser technologyBachelor's or higher in electrical or systems engineering, radar technology knowledge
Work EnvironmentDefense labs, military projects, aerospace facilitiesDefense agencies, aerospace companies, military installations
Industry UsageMilitary defense, aerospace, research institutionsMilitary defense, aerospace, surveillance systems

Both roles involve working with complex defense systems in similar environments, requiring engineering expertise. Laser Weapon Systems Engineers focus on laser-based weaponry, while Radar Systems Engineers specialize in radar detection and tracking systems. They share similar credentials and work settings, but their technical focus differs significantly.

What are Laser Weapon Systems Engineers?

Laser Weapon Systems Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain high-energy laser weapon systems for defense and security applications. Their work involves integrating laser technology with targeting, tracking, and control systems to create effective directed energy weapons. They collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to solve technical challenges, ensure system safety, and meet military performance requirements. This role requires expertise in optics, electronics, and advanced materials, as well as knowledge of military standards and protocols.

What are some common challenges faced by Laser Weapon Systems Engineers when integrating new technologies into existing defense platforms?

Laser Weapon Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to compatibility and power management when integrating new laser technologies into established defense platforms. Existing systems may have limitations in terms of available space, cooling capacity, or power supply, requiring innovative engineering solutions. Additionally, ensuring the safe and effective operation of high-energy lasers in dynamic environments demands rigorous testing and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including software, electrical, and mechanical engineers. Staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving laser technologies and defense standards is also essential for success in this role.

Job description

PeopleTec is currently seeking a DEPO Systems Engineer to support our Huntsville, AL location.

The Directed Energy Project Office (DEPO), part of the Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO), develops, integrates, and transitions High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon systems to meet Army operational needs. This position supports the Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program as part of the government engineering team responsible for overseeing system performance, integration, and production activities. This position supports the Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program as part of the government engineering team responsible for ensuring system performance, integration, and production alignment with government requirements. The systems engineer will apply a broad systems perspective - supporting requirements development, design, integration, and verification - while collaborating with government and contractor engineers to ensure subsystem alignment with established interfaces and performance standards. The engineer will also engage directly with prime contractors, subcontractors, and integration partners to verify compliance with government specifications and ensure seamless system-level integration. The role further supports warfighter integration and acquisition planning from a technical perspective to ensure the E-HEL system remains operationally relevant and technically sound throughout its lifecycle. This position requires a collaborative systems engineering mindset, analytical problem-solving, and the ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced DoD program environment.

Duties:

  • Support systems engineering activities across the E-HEL system lifecycle, including requirements development, interface management, integration, and verification.
  • Collaborate with government and contractor teams to ensure subsystem designs align with government interface specifications and performance baselines.
  • Participate in the development, review, and management of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and related technical data.
  • Support system integration, verification, and validation (V&V) planning and execution in laboratory, production, and field environments.
  • Contribute to technical reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR) and provide input to ensure engineering rigor and configuration discipline.
  • Assist in evaluating contractor deliverables, engineering changes, and risk assessments.
  • Provide technical input to warfighter training, operational integration, and acquisition planning activities.
  • Identify and communicate engineering risks, trade-offs, and performance impacts to government leadership.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system-level performance alignment.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Active U.S. DoD Secret clearance is required to perform this work. Candidates are required to have a Secret clearance upon hire, and the ability to maintain this clearance level during employment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of systems engineering processes, including requirements development, interface management, and test planning.
  • Proficiency in systems engineering methodologies, digital engineering tools, and MBSE practices.
  • Experience working within DoD acquisition and system integration environments.
  • Familiarity with government-managed interface control processes, including participation in ICD development and verification.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to brief senior Army and DoD leaders.
  • Travel: 20%
  • Position: Mid-Level (~8-15 years) Electrical Engineer with experience in Directed Energy, Power & Thermal, Optics for HEL Weapon Systems (Experience w/MBSE development, M&S software, etc. is preferred but not required).

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with directed energy systems or other complex weapon systems.
  • Familiarity with Army acquisition pathways, including prototyping and rapid fielding.
  • Experience leading cross-disciplinary engineering teams and coordinating with external stakeholders.
