What is a Laser Scanning job?

A Laser Scanning job involves using specialized equipment to capture high-precision 3D data of objects, buildings, or landscapes. Professionals in this field operate laser scanners to collect spatial information, which is then processed into digital models for applications in construction, engineering, archaeology, and other industries. They may also analyze and interpret scan data to assist in project planning, inspections, or restorations. This role requires knowledge of scanning technology, software, and data processing techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Laser Scanning position, and why are they important?

To excel in Laser Scanning, you need expertise in 3D data acquisition, spatial analysis, and site documentation, often backed by experience or education in surveying, engineering, or geospatial sciences. Familiarity with laser scanning equipment (such as terrestrial LiDAR scanners), data processing software (like Autodesk ReCap or Leica Cyclone), and relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Survey Technician) is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help professionals accurately interpret data and effectively work with project teams. These skills are essential to ensure precise data capture, meet project requirements, and facilitate smooth collaboration in various environments.

What are the typical daily tasks and responsibilities for someone working in Laser Scanning?

In a Laser Scanning role, your daily tasks generally involve preparing, operating, and maintaining laser scanning equipment at job sites to capture accurate 3D data of structures or landscapes. You’ll also process and analyze point cloud data using specialized software, create detailed reports or 3D models, and collaborate closely with surveyors, engineers, or architects to ensure the data meets project specifications. Most roles require a mix of fieldwork and office work, so adaptability is important. Attention to safety protocols and quality assurance checks is also a regular part of the job to guarantee high-quality deliverables that support project success.

Job description

At Stevenson Systems, we transform the way the world understands space. As a leader in architectural measurement, 3D scanning, and building documentation, we partner with some of the most recognized commercial real estate owners, architects, and developers across the globe. Our work supports iconic projects by delivering precise, real-world data that drives better decisions and stronger outcomes.

We are a fast-growing, technology-driven company powered by a team that values accuracy, curiosity, and collaboration. Using advanced 3D laser scanning and field verification tools, our teams document some of the most prominent commercial buildings in the country. We are seeking motivated, detail-oriented individuals who enjoy travel, hands-on fieldwork, and working directly in buildings rather than behind a desk.

Role Overview

As a Field Survey & 3D Scanning Specialist, you will be responsible for conducting onsite building surveys, operating 3D laser scanning equipment, and collecting accurate field data used for downstream architectural and space analysis workflows. This role is field-first, with a strong emphasis on travel, physical site work, and data capture.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy being on-site, working with cutting-edge technology, and playing a critical role in documenting real-world conditions for high-profile commercial properties. No experience needed! We'll train you!

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to commercial buildings nationwide to perform on-site field surveys and data collection
  • Operate 3D laser scanners and related reality-capture equipment
  • Verify building conditions, floor layouts, and physical features through direct observation and measurement
  • Collect accurate field notes, photos, and scan data to support downstream documentation and analysis
  • Work independently on-site while maintaining consistent communication with internal teams
  • Follow standardized field procedures to ensure accuracy, safety, and consistency
  • Learn and apply Stevenson Systems’ proprietary measurement and Space Accounting methodologies
  • Represent Stevenson Systems professionally with clients and property teams during site visits

Required Qualifications

  • Willingness and ability to travel appr. 15 days per month, often out of state
  • Comfortable working long site days (up to 10 hours of walking and standing)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate data collection
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently in unfamiliar buildings and environments
  • Basic understanding of measurements, scales, and spatial relationships
  • Comfort using laptops, tablets, and technical equipment in the field

Preferred / Bonus Skills

  • Experience with 3D laser scanning, reality capture, or field survey work
  • Prior experience in construction, surveying, facilities, engineering, or building documentation
  • Exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, or point cloud environments
  • Familiarity with BOMA or commercial space measurement standards

Training & Growth

  • All new hires participate in a paid training program covering field procedures, scanning equipment, safety, and Stevenson Systems’ methodologies
  • Advancement paths into senior field roles and drafting/modeling positions.
  • Ongoing exposure to cutting-edge technology and nationally recognized commercial properties
