Laser Programmer Operator information

What is a laser programmer operator?

A Laser Programmer Operator is a skilled technician who programs and operates laser cutting machines to cut, engrave, or mark materials such as metal, plastic, or wood. They use specialized software to create or modify designs, set up the machine parameters, and monitor the cutting process to ensure accuracy and quality. Laser Programmer Operators are responsible for maintaining equipment, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring safety standards are met in the workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laser programmer operator?

To thrive as a Laser Programmer Operator, you need strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading skills, and experience with CNC machinery, typically supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, laser cutting systems, and quality measurement tools is essential for programming and operating equipment efficiently. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help ensure precision and safe workplace collaboration. These skills are crucial for maintaining production quality, minimizing errors, and optimizing manufacturing workflows.

What are some typical challenges faced by laser programmer operators, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Laser Programmer Operators often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex technical drawings, ensuring precise machine calibration, and troubleshooting equipment errors. Successfully managing these tasks requires strong attention to detail, familiarity with CAD/CAM software, and a proactive approach to machine maintenance. Collaborating closely with engineers and production teams can help clarify design requirements and streamline production, while ongoing training keeps operators updated on new technologies and best practices.

What is the difference between Laser Programmer Operator vs CNC Machinist?

CNC Laser Programmer

Sinton, TX (Corpus Christi area)  ·  Full-time  ·  On-site  ·  [Day shift]

Competitive Pay +  profit-sharing bonus

Own the laser programming function at our growing Sinton, TX fabrication operation — 30 minutes from Corpus Christi. You’ll turn customer drawings into optimized nests and accurate quotes on modern fiber laser and press brake equipment, working directly with sales and the shop floor to get quality parts out the door on time. Programming is the must-have; we’ll train the right programmer on estimating.

Above-market benefits: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, life & disability insurance — plus profit sharing.

What You’ll Do

•   Program and nest parts for CNC fiber laser cutting to minimize scrap and maximize material efficiency.

•   Review and approve part drawings for manufacturability before they hit the floor.

•   Prepare price quotes for laser-processed and fabricated parts (we’ll train you on our quoting process).

•   Partner with sales, equipment operators, schedulers, and shipping so parts are processed and delivered on time.

•   Track productivity, quality, scrap, and rework, and use those numbers to drive continuous improvement.

What You’ll Bring

•   High school diploma or equivalent.

•   3+ years programming and/or nesting parts for CNC laser, press brake, plasma, waterjet, or similar CNC fabrication equipment.

•   Demonstrated proficiency with CAD/CAM software.

•   Proficiency with Microsoft applications, including Excel.

No estimating experience required — we’ll train the right programmer.

Nice to Have

•   Experience with TruTops Boost (TRUMPF) or BySoft (Bystronic) software.

•   Quoting or estimating experience in a fabrication environment.

•   Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous-improvement experience.

•   A track record of improving scrap, rework, or production efficiency.

Our Benefits

We’ve built a benefits program that is above market — competitive in our industry and in every region where we operate. Friedman employees enjoy:

•   100% employer-paid health, dental, life, and short & long-term disability insurance

•   Vision insurance

•   401(k) retirement plan

•   Education reimbursement

•   11 paid holidays per year

•   PTO (personal time off)

•   Paid maternity & paternity leave programs

•   Bonus programs (profit-sharing incentive)

•   Uniform & PPE provided
