Job description

Technique is looking for a 3D Laser Technician (Multi-Axis Laser) to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the 3D Laser Manager. This is a highly skilled technical position, requiring the ability to make fast and accurate decisions relating to the production process and advanced multi-axis laser cutting equipment. The role progresses from general operator functions, such as loading parts and recognizing cut quality and position, to Level 1 technician competencies including fixture setup, program management, blueprint reading, and troubleshooting.
The ideal candidate brings a good understanding of materials, tolerances, and 6-axis laser cutting techniques, along with basic problem-solving skills and the ability to understand and learn blueprints. Familiarity with lockout/tagout procedures, surface plate layouts, and basic tack welding, as well as a strong commitment to safe work practices, are critical factors in this role.
Responsibilities:
  • Work safely - Working safely is an essential function of this position; follow safe work practices that are clearly defined within company and department-specific safety procedures.

3D Laser General Operator:
  • General labor - Perform general labor duties.
  • Maintain work environment - Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Load parts - Load parts in the machine.
  • Start/stop machine process - Start and stop the machine process.
  • Recognize cut quality - Recognize good and bad cut quality.
  • Recognize cut position - Recognize good and bad cut position.
  • Run hand grinder/sander - Run a hand grinder and sander.
  • Obtain industrial truck license - Obtain an industrial truck license.

3D Laser Technician Level 1 (Competency in General Labor functions):
  • Apply problem-solving skills - Apply basic problem-solving skills to the production process.
  • Power up/shut down machines - Power up and shut down laser machines.
  • Follow lockout/tagout - Know and follow the lockout/tagout procedure.
  • Understand job paperwork - Understand job paperwork (IPDS, router, etc.).
  • Manage part storage - Understand part storage both pre- and post-process.
  • Adjust cut quality - Use manual overrides to adjust cut quality.
  • Read blueprints - Understand and learn blueprints.
  • Perform surface plate layouts - Perform basic surface plate layouts.
  • Load/delete programs - Load and delete programs.
  • Set fixtures and run repeat jobs - Set fixtures, find datums, and run repeat jobs that do not require extensive CAD changes.
  • Locate fixtures - Use the Hanel Log to locate fixtures in the Hanel lift system.
  • Visualize cutting paths - Open software and visualize cutting paths.
  • Troubleshoot alarms - Interpret, troubleshoot, and clear basic alarms.
  • Perform basic welding - Perform basic welding (tack welding).

Requirements:
  • Ability to make fast and accurate decisions relating to the production process and advanced multi-axis laser cutting equipment
  • Good understanding of materials, tolerances, and 6-axis laser cutting techniques
  • Commitment to safe work practices as defined within company and department-specific safety procedures
  • Ability to work overtime and maintain flexibility in work schedule
  • Ability to obtain an industrial truck license

Position Type and Expected Hours:
This is a non-exempt position. Working overtime and flexibility in work schedule are essential functions of this position. Note: days and hours required may vary.
