Job description

Clayton Services is searching for an experienced Landscape Architect / Designer to join an established design-build firm in the Houston area. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of residential landscape projects from initial concept and client presentation through construction and final installation.


This is a highly involved role for someone who enjoys both the creative and practical sides of landscape design. The Landscape Architect / Designer will develop thoughtful outdoor environments, work directly with clients, prepare design and construction documentation, and collaborate with field teams and outside project partners to bring each design to life.


The ideal candidate has a strong residential design background, understands how projects are actually constructed in the field, and is comfortable managing client relationships throughout the process.


Job Type: Direct Hire

Pay Rate: $100,000 - $120,000 plus discretionary bonus opportunity

Landscape Architect / Designer Responsibilities:


  • Manage residential landscape design projects from initial consultation and conceptual development through construction and installation.
  • Develop creative, functional landscape concepts based on client objectives, architectural elements, site conditions, and project requirements.
  • Prepare conceptual drawings, client presentations, layouts, construction documents, details, and other supporting design materials.
  • Produce accurate plans using AutoCAD and related landscape design software.
  • Develop coordinated plans that may incorporate site layouts, materials, planting, grading, drainage, irrigation, lighting, and other exterior elements.
  • Conduct site visits, field measurements, site analysis, and documentation of existing conditions.
  • Present design concepts, recommendations, and project proposals directly to clients.
  • Guide clients through design decisions involving project scope, materials, functionality, aesthetics, and budget considerations.
  • Participate in the business development and sales process by communicating the value and vision of proposed projects.
  • Coordinate with construction personnel, subcontractors, architects, builders, interior designers, engineers, and other project partners.
  • Provide design clarification and support during construction to ensure the completed work remains consistent with the overall design intent.
  • Visit active project sites as necessary to review progress, answer questions, resolve design-related issues, and assist with project execution.
  • Coordinate landscape requirements involving planting, irrigation, drainage, grading, lighting, hardscape, and related exterior improvements.
  • Review applicable permitting requirements, neighborhood restrictions, and other regulations affecting individual projects.
  • Monitor project budgets and make design decisions with consideration for construction costs and client expectations.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously at various stages of design, approval, construction, and completion.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and communicate changes or requirements to appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop strong client relationships through responsiveness, professionalism, attention to detail, and consistent follow-through.
  • Adapt to changing project priorities and move effectively between design work, client meetings, field coordination, and project management responsibilities.


Landscape Architect / Designer Skills and Abilities:


  • Strong landscape design skills with the ability to develop creative concepts that can be successfully constructed in the field.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and related landscape design software.
  • Strong understanding of residential landscape design and design-build project execution.
  • Working knowledge of planting design, hardscape materials, grading, drainage, irrigation, lighting, and other exterior construction elements.
  • Ability to produce clear, organized, and technically accurate design and construction documentation.
  • Understanding of construction methods and the practical considerations involved in translating a landscape design into a finished project.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Ability to evaluate site conditions and identify potential design or construction challenges.
  • Strong client-facing communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Comfortable presenting design concepts and proposals and discussing project scope, recommendations, and costs with clients.

Landscape Architect / Designer Education and Experience:


  • 5+ years of professional experience in landscape architecture, landscape design, design-build, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing landscape projects from concept through construction or installation.
  • Residential landscape design or residential design-build experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working directly with clients and presenting design concepts or project proposals.
  • Previous experience coordinating with construction teams, contractors, architects, builders, or other design professionals.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD required.
  • Experience with landscape-specific CAD or design software preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of grading, drainage, planting, irrigation, and construction coordination preferred.
  • Degree in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Design, Horticulture, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Professional landscape architecture licensure is a plus but not required.
  • Portfolio of relevant design work required. Portfolio should demonstrate conceptual design capabilities, technical documentation, and experience with projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally to project sites as needed.
