Job description

Salary: $32-$40 per hour DOE

Position Summary

Assist the Lead Landscaper in ensuring the safe, efficient, and professional maintenance of all Port-owned grounds, facilities, and golf course properties. This position is responsible for maintaining landscaped areas, athletic-quality turf, golf course greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, irrigation systems, and related facilities to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.


Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

  • Perform groundskeeping and building maintenance duties as assigned by the Lead Landscaper.
  • Mow lawns using walk-behind mowers, riding mowers, or tractor-mounted equipment.
  • Cut, trim, and edge turf around sidewalks, flower beds, walls, and landscaped areas.
  • Plant, cultivate, and maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, grass, and other landscape materials.
  • Operate tractors, utility vehicles, loaders, mowers, aerators, sprayers, topdressers, and other grounds maintenance equipment in accordance with Port procedures and safety regulations.
  • Sweep sidewalks and paved surfaces and remove leaves and debris using blowers or other equipment.
  • Trim shrubs, prune trees, rake, mulch, weed, and maintain landscaped areas.
  • Water plants, trees, and turf as needed.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, winterize, and start up irrigation systems.
  • Remove snow from walkways and apply ice melt as necessary.


Golf Course Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Perform daily maintenance of golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and practice areas.
  • Mow greens, tees, collars, approaches, fairways, and roughs to established standards.
  • Assist with course setup, including changing cup locations, tee markers, signage, and hazard markers.
  • Monitor and maintain putting green speed, consistency, and overall turf quality.
  • Perform turf cultural practices including aerification, verticutting, topdressing, overseeding, rolling, and fertilization.
  • Repair ball marks, divots, worn turf areas, and other course damage.
  • Rake and maintain sand bunkers, including edging, sand redistribution, and debris removal.
  • Monitor turf health and identify weeds, insects, diseases, irrigation issues, or other conditions requiring attention.
  • Safely apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other turf products in accordance with applicable laws and licensing requirements.
  • Assist with irrigation scheduling, sprinkler repairs, moisture management, and water conservation practices.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine cleaning of golf course equipment.
  • Assist with special golf tournaments, events, and course preparation as needed.
  • Maintain a high standard of appearance and playability throughout the golf course.


Secondary Functions

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Supervisory Responsibility

This position has some supervisory responsibilities.


Specific Job Skills

  • Knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, particularly the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, and bunkers.
  • Knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, and landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment including greens mowers, fairway mowers, rough mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, trimmers, blowers, sprayers, aerators, and other specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of grounds and golf course equipment.
  • Understanding of fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, and chemical application practices.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to identify turf diseases, insects, weeds, and irrigation deficiencies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, lift, and perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.


Education and/or Experience

  • Landscaping or golf course maintenance degree preferred.
  • Experience in supervising others.
  • One or more years of golf course maintenance or commercial landscape maintenance experience preferred.
  • Experience maintaining golf course greens is highly desirable.
  • Oregon Pesticide Applicator License or the ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe preferred.
  • Heavy equipment and lawn equipment experience preferred.

Job Conditions

Working conditions include working independently and with others, operating heavy and specialized grounds maintenance equipment, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fuel, vibration, poor ventilation, temperature extremes, uneven terrain, and frequent interruptions. Early morning, weekend, holiday, or overtime work may be required to support seasonal maintenance schedules, golf tournaments, weather events, or operational needs.
