What is a landscape internship?

A landscape internship is a temporary, practical work experience for students or recent graduates interested in landscape architecture or landscaping. During the internship, interns typically assist with design projects, site visits, plant selection, and sometimes hands-on installation or maintenance tasks. This role helps interns gain real-world experience, develop professional skills, and build a network within the landscaping industry. Internships can take place at design firms, nurseries, government agencies, or landscaping companies. They are valuable stepping stones to future careers in landscape architecture or horticulture.

What do I do during a landscape internship?

During a landscape internship, you'll typically assist with a variety of projects such as site analysis, drafting landscape designs, preparing presentations, and supporting project managers with client communications. Interns often work alongside experienced landscape architects and designers, contributing to both fieldwork and office tasks. This hands-on experience helps you develop technical skills, learn industry-standard software, and gain exposure to real-world project cycles. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including architects, engineers, and horticulturists—is also common, providing a comprehensive understanding of the landscape design process.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a landscape internship?

To thrive as a Landscape Intern, you need a foundational understanding of landscape design principles, plant identification, and basic horticultural practices, often supported by coursework in landscape architecture or related fields. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and GIS, as well as proficiency in hand drafting and site analysis tools, is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help interns collaborate effectively and adapt to project needs. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing quality design work, learning on the job, and contributing positively to landscape projects.
