Landscape estimating is the process of calculating the costs, materials, and labor required for a landscaping project. Estimators review project plans, site conditions, and client requirements to develop accurate budgets and bids. This role is essential in ensuring that landscaping projects are completed within budget and resources are allocated efficiently. Landscape estimators often work closely with designers, contractors, and suppliers to gather information and provide detailed cost breakdowns.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in landscape estimating, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in landscape estimating often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing site conditions, managing fluctuating material costs, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders like designers, contractors, and clients. Addressing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, up-to-date knowledge of plant and material pricing, and effective communication skills. Job description

Position Summary
The Residential Landscape Estimator owns the full sales and estimating pipeline for residential landscape construction projects. This role manages the client experience from initial lead intake and site walks through accurate cost estimation, proposal delivery, and smooth project handoff to the production team.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Manage inbound and self-generated project leads throughout the full residential sales cycle.
  • Conduct professional site walks with homeowners, general contractors, and property managers.
  • Perform accurate takeoffs and structural cost estimates for pavers, synthetic turf, retaining walls, planting, irrigation systems, and associated landscape projects.
  • Build and present clear, professional proposals using Aspire CRM that clearly outline project scopes, exclusions, and assumptions.
  • Price all construction projects accurately to meet target company margins and gross profit goals.
  • Coordinate constructability and scope reviews with the operations team prior to final project handoff.
  • Maintain tidy sales records in Aspire CRM, updating opportunity stages, pipeline forecasts, and critical client notes daily.
  • Identify enhancement and upselling opportunities to maximize value for existing residential clients.

Decision Rights and Boundaries
  • Owns lead management, site evaluations, takeoff calculations, and contract drafting for the construction division.
  • Does not own daily field crew execution, material procurement, or physical project management once construction begins.
  • Escalates unique material pricing, customized labor rates, and margin adjustments outside standard guidelines to the Director of Operations.

Qualifications and Experience
  • 3-5+ years of experience in landscape sales, construction estimating, or field project management.
  • Strong knowledge of landscape construction methods, specifically regarding grading, irrigation, hardscapes, and local plant varieties.
  • Hands-on experience using Aspire CRM or a similar landscape estimating software is highly preferred.
  • Excellent communication, follow-through, and organization skills to guide clients comfortably through the design-build process.
