What is a landscape drafter?

Landscape Drafters are professionals who create detailed drawings and plans for landscaping projects, such as parks, gardens, and public spaces. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software or manual drafting techniques to illustrate the layout of plants, walkways, water features, and other landscaping elements. Their work supports landscape architects and contractors by translating design concepts into technical documents that guide construction and installation. Landscape Drafters must have a good understanding of both design principles and technical standards relevant to landscaping. Attention to detail and strong communication skills are important in this role.

How does a landscape drafter typically collaborate with landscape architects and other design team members on a project?

As a Landscape Drafter, you will work closely with landscape architects, civil engineers, and sometimes urban planners to transform conceptual designs into detailed technical drawings. Collaboration often involves attending project meetings, integrating feedback from architects, and ensuring that drawings meet both aesthetic and regulatory requirements. You may also coordinate with surveyors and construction teams to resolve site-specific challenges, making effective communication and attention to detail key aspects of the role. Being proactive in sharing updates and clarifying design intent helps ensure that the final plans are accurate and buildable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Drafter, you need a solid understanding of landscape design principles, drafting techniques, and proficiency in reading construction documents, typically backed by an associate degree or technical training in drafting. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D), GIS systems, and digital rendering tools is essential. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with landscape architects and clients. These skills enable accurate and visually compelling plans that meet design intent and regulatory requirements, ensuring project success.

Job description

SC Registered Landscape Architect
Location: Johns Island, SC (Charleston / Lowcountry)
Compensation: $85,000 - $100,000 includes performance-based bonuses
About Brownswood: A Legacy of Excellence Since 1978
For nearly five decades, Brownswood Nursery & Landscape has quietly shaped some of the Charleston area's most enduring residential landscapes. Our work is defined by a deep respect for place, a strong horticultural foundation, and design that is both refined and buildable.
As a fully integrated design-build firm - with an expansive nursery, in-house design studio, and experienced installation teams - we offer a level of creative and technical continuity that is increasingly rare. This structure allows our designers to work with intention, precision, and confidence from concept through construction.
The Position
We are seeking a South Carolina Registered Landscape Architect to play a leading role within our residential design studio. This is an opportunity for a licensed professional who values thoughtful design, collaborative process, and the craft of seeing projects realized at a high level.
You will help guide design direction, set studio standards, and ensure that each project moves seamlessly from idea to built landscape - maintaining design integrity at every stage.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and technical documentation of custom residential landscape projects
  • Establish and uphold studio standards for design quality, drafting, and presentation
  • Stamp and seal permitting and construction documents in accordance with local and state requirements
  • Work closely with installation, nursery, and project management teams to ensure designs are informed by site conditions, plant availability, and construction realities
  • Participate in select client meetings and presentations
  • Mentor design staff and contribute to a thoughtful, collaborative studio culture

Qualifications
  • Active South Carolina Landscape Architect license (or reciprocity eligible)
  • 5+ years of professional experience in residential or design-build landscape architecture
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and relevant design software
  • Strong horticultural knowledge, particularly within the Lowcountry climate and soils
  • Clear communicator with a calm, confident leadership presence
  • A design sensibility that balances creativity with technical rigor

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: - , commensurate with experience
  • Performance-based annual bonus
  • Paid time off
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Childcare reimbursement credit
  • Employee discount
  • Relocation assistance for qualified candidates

Why Brownswood
This role offers the chance to work within a design-driven, well-resourced firm where landscapes are approached as long-term compositions - not quick installations. You'll have the support of in-house experts, the autonomy to lead, and the opportunity to help shape a studio rooted in quality, collaboration, and enduring design.
