What is landscape construction?

A Landscape Construction job involves building and installing outdoor spaces, such as gardens, patios, walkways, retaining walls, and irrigation systems. Workers in this field use a combination of hardscaping (stone, wood, or concrete structures) and softscaping (plants, trees, and turf) to create functional and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. They may work for landscaping companies, contractors, or as independent professionals. The job requires physical labor, knowledge of construction techniques, and an understanding of site preparation and drainage.

What are the typical daily responsibilities in landscape construction?

Landscape construction professionals usually start their day by reviewing project plans, preparing sites, and setting up necessary equipment and materials. Daily tasks often include grading terrain, installing hardscapes like patios and retaining walls, planting trees or shrubs, laying irrigation systems, and ensuring everything meets design specifications. Team coordination is key, as crews often collaborate closely to complete projects on time. You may also need to interact with clients or project managers to address questions and handle any on-site changes or challenges. The role can be physically demanding but offers the satisfaction of transforming outdoor spaces from concept to reality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in landscape construction?

To thrive in Landscape Construction, you typically need experience in landscaping techniques, ability to read blueprints, and knowledge of horticulture, construction safety, and site preparation. Familiarity with industry-standard tools and equipment such as skid steers, excavators, and laser levels, as well as certifications like OSHA safety training or a landscape certification, are often required. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with crews and clients while adapting to changing site conditions. These combined skills are crucial for building durable, visually appealing landscapes efficiently and safely.

Do landscape construction make good money?

Landscape construction professionals can earn a wide range of wages depending on experience, location, and skill level. Entry-level workers may start with lower pay, while experienced crews or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages, often supplemented by overtime and seasonal work. Certification and proficiency with tools like excavation equipment can also impact earning potential.

Landscape Construction Foreman

Location: Tempe, AZ
Pay: $27–$32/hour equivalent, based on experience
Classification: Salaried Non-Exempt
Schedule: Full-time, year-round work

Employment Eligibility: Refined Gardens participates in E-Verify. All employees must provide documentation establishing identity and authorization to work in the United States as required by federal law.

Refined Gardens specializes in high-end residential landscape construction throughout the Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley areas. We are looking for an experienced Landscape Construction Foreman who can lead a crew, understand construction plans, solve problems in the field, and take ownership of the daily execution of complex landscape projects.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who understands how quality landscape construction should be built and can lead others to consistently meet that standard.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $27–$32/hour equivalent, based on experience
  • Guaranteed 40-hour weekly salary
  • Overtime eligible for hours worked over 40
  • Project performance bonuses
  • Summer and year-end bonuses
  • Weekly pay
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits after 90 days
  • Up to 3 weeks of PTO in your first year
  • 401(k) with company match after 1 year
  • Year-round employment
  • Company-provided tools and equipment
  • Opportunities for advancement into Construction Management and Project Management roles

Unlike a traditional hourly position, your regular 40-hour weekly pay is guaranteed while you remain eligible for overtime when additional hours are required.

What You'll Do

As a Landscape Construction Foreman, you will be responsible for the daily field execution of landscape construction projects while leading a crew of approximately 3–6 team members.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead daily construction activities and maintain accountability for crew productivity, workmanship, and safety
  • Read and interpret landscape plans, construction details, dimensions, elevations, and project layouts
  • Lay out work accurately in the field and identify potential conflicts before installation
  • Assign daily responsibilities and clearly communicate expectations to crew members
  • Train crew members on proper installation methods and construction standards
  • Maintain appropriate production pace without sacrificing quality
  • Coordinate daily with the Project Manager regarding progress, scheduling, materials, equipment, changes, and field conditions
  • Anticipate material and equipment needs to minimize downtime
  • Verify completed work against plans and company quality standards
  • Identify problems in the field and develop practical solutions before they become larger issues
  • Operate skid steers, mini excavators, compact equipment, power tools, and other construction equipment as needed
  • Maintain an organized, professional, and clean jobsite appropriate for high-end residential properties
  • Document job progress, completed work, and important field conditions using our app-based project management system

Construction Knowledge

Qualified candidates should have working knowledge of multiple areas of landscape construction, including:

  • Site layout, grading, and elevations
  • Drainage and proper water management
  • Hardscape installation and base preparation
  • Masonry and concrete construction
  • Irrigation installation and troubleshooting
  • Steel edging and basic welding/fabrication
  • Planting and soil preparation
  • Landscape lighting fundamentals
  • Construction materials, tools, and equipment

You do not need to personally perform every trade at an expert level, but you must understand proper construction methods well enough to direct the work, train your crew, identify mistakes, and ensure the finished product meets our standards.

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience as a Landscape Construction Foreman or comparable field leadership position
  • Strong understanding of landscape construction methods and sequencing
  • Ability to read and work from construction plans
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and hold a crew accountable
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly with Project Managers and other field leadership
  • Experience operating skid steers, mini excavators, and similar equipment
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to perform physical construction work and lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in Arizona conditions
  • English/Spanish bilingual ability is strongly preferred

The Right Person for This Role

Our strongest foremen don't wait for someone else to tell them every next step. They understand the plans, know where the project needs to go, organize their crew accordingly, and communicate early when they see a problem.

They take pride in the details, understand that productivity and quality are equally important, and recognize that working on high-end residential properties requires a higher level of professionalism, organization, and craftsmanship.

If you know how landscape construction should be built, can explain that process to others, and can lead a crew to execute it correctly, this may be the right role for you.
