What is the difference between Landscape Architect Part Time vs Landscape Designer Part Time?

AspectLandscape Architect Part TimeLandscape Designer Part Time
CredentialsLicensing required in many states, degree in landscape architectureNo license required, degree or certification preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, government agencies, private clientsDesign firms, freelance, residential projects
Job ResponsibilitiesSite planning, compliance, technical drawingsConceptual design, plant selection, client presentations

While both roles involve landscape design, Landscape Architect Part Time typically requires licensure and focuses on technical, regulatory, and site planning aspects. Landscape Designer Part Time often emphasizes creative design and client interaction without licensing requirements. The roles overlap in design skills but differ in credentials and scope of responsibilities.

What are some typical challenges faced by part-time landscape architects, and how can they navigate them?

Part-time landscape architects often face challenges related to project continuity and communication, as they may not be present on-site or in meetings as frequently as full-time team members. To navigate these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels with colleagues and clients, maintain detailed project documentation, and be proactive in scheduling check-ins. This approach ensures that you stay aligned with project goals and can effectively contribute to the team's success despite a reduced schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Landscape Architect Part Time, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Architect Part Time, you need a background in landscape design, site planning, and environmental analysis, often supported by a degree in landscape architecture and state licensure. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and GIS systems, as well as knowledge of local building codes, is typically required. Creative problem-solving, strong communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively and manage multiple projects efficiently. These competencies are essential for producing innovative, sustainable designs that meet client needs and regulatory standards within limited timeframes.

What are part-time landscape architects?

Part-time landscape architects are professionals who design outdoor spaces, such as parks, gardens, and campuses, but work fewer hours than full-time employees. They may focus on developing plans, selecting materials, and coordinating with clients or contractors, often on a flexible or reduced schedule. This role is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplementing other commitments while still contributing their design expertise to various projects.

Job description

Strong and vibrant communities don't just happen-they're creatively imagined, collaboratively planned, and designed. At Stantec, we bring together landscape architects, planners, engineers, architects, and designers to shape resilient, inclusive, and inspiring public spaces. Our New York City Landscape Architecture studio is seeking a Senior Landscape Architect / Designer to play a leading role in concept-driven design for complex urban projects.
Your Opportunity
As a Senior Landscape Architect / Designer, you will be a key contributor within Stantec's multidisciplinary Community Development team, working on projects where landscape architecture plays a central role in shaping public space, infrastructure, and urban environments. This role is ideal for a designer with strong conceptual thinking skills who can translate complex site conditions into clear, compelling design ideas and confidently lead early design phases.
In addition to design leadership, you will support business development efforts, collaborating with project managers and principals on proposals, interviews, and pursuit strategies that position our studio to win new work with existing and prospective clients.
You will collaborate closely with planners, engineers, architects, environmental scientists, and clients on parks, waterfronts, greenways, campuses, playgrounds, and other civic projects throughout New York City and beyond.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Lead concept development from early site analysis through design direction and refinement
  • Translate site, ecological, regulatory, and programmatic constraints into clear spatial ideas
  • Develop diagrams, drawings, renderings, and written narratives that effectively communicate design intent
  • Present design work to clients, agencies, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Collaborate with planners, engineers, and architects to integrate landscape thinking into complex projects
  • Guide design development while maintaining the clarity and strength of the original concept
  • Contribute to business development and proposal efforts, including design narratives, graphics, and interview materials
  • Contribute to studio culture through design critique, collaboration, and mentorship

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong spatial thinking, design judgment, and conceptual design skills
  • Ability to quickly analyze sites and synthesize technical and contextual information
  • Confidence leading design conversations and presentations with clients and project teams
  • Experience contributing to proposals, pursuits, and interview presentations
  • Clear graphic, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Rhino, and other relevant design and project management software
  • Planting design knowledge is a distinct plus
  • Ability to integrate nature-based solutions and climate adaptability on complex assignments

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited Landscape Architecture program.
  • 7-10+ years of professional experience in landscape architecture, with demonstrated involvement in concept design and early project phases
  • Professional licensure (or progress toward licensure) preferred

Portfolio Requirement
Applicants must submit a digital design portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual thinking, graphic communication, and built or unbuilt work. The portfolio should highlight experience in early-phase design, including site analysis, diagrams, plans, and visual storytelling.
  • Portfolio may be submitted as a PDF or web-based link
  • Work samples should clearly indicate the applicant's role and level of responsibility on each project
