How much do land surveyor jobs pay per year?
What Do Land Surveyors Do?
Land surveyors measure properties and plots of land to delineate boundaries of property lines and gather data on the shape and contour of the landscape. This information is essential for determining the location of buildings and roads, preventing or settling disputes over property lines, and contributing to the creation of maps. When assigned a project, land surveyors research the specific property, examining previous surveys, land records, and land titles that may exist for reference. They measure distances and angles between locations and utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to create accurate digital maps of an area. Land surveyors use these maps and reports to advise government agencies and businesses on where to build construction projects, such as homes, roads, and landfills.

What is the difference between Land Surveyor vs Civil Engineer?
| Aspect | Land Surveyor | Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | State licensure, surveying certifications | Engineering degree, PE license |
| Work Environment | Outdoor fieldwork, surveying sites | Office and construction sites, design projects |
| Industry Usage | Real estate, construction, land development | Infrastructure, transportation, public works |
| Common Search Intent | Surveying roles, land measurement | Engineering design, project planning |
While both Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers work in construction and land development, Land Surveyors focus on measuring and mapping land boundaries, often working outdoors. Civil Engineers design and oversee infrastructure projects, primarily working in offices and on-site construction. Their credentials, work environments, and industry roles differ, but they often collaborate on land development projects.
